Job description

Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen is keen on contributing to a healthy and sustainable society. By conducting applied research together with small and medium-sized businesses as well as larger companies, we are developing new biobased products, processes and activities that meet market requirements and demand. In the Research Centre Biobased Economy all of the available knowledge and experience on the biobased economy is gathered.

The Research Centre Biobased Economy currently has three professorships: Biobased Ingredients & Materials, Biobased Refinery and Biobased Society. One of the research themes for the Biobased Ingredients & Materials professorship is Data Science for Life Science & Health. The aim of this research theme is to utilise existing technologies and develop new ones in order to optimise the use of Life Science databases by various sectors. This process will contribute to cost-effective and high-quality health care and innovations in the Life Science industry. To help us achieve this aim, we now have a job vacancy for a Professor of Data Science for Life Science & Health.

What we expect from the professor

A professorship is synonymous with innovation. You will initiate and coordinate applied research into Data Science challenges within the field of Life Science & Health. In our society, various types of research generate an increasing amount of data. These data can be harnessed to benefit preventive or personalised medicine, or to serve as personal and biological data for the Life Science domain. As a consequence, there is an urgent need in both the public and the private sector for expertise as well as research in this field.

You have the ambition to shape and focus the research theme based on your specific Data Science expertise. To this end, you will develop and nurture networks and external sources of funding. You will be responsible for coordinating the content of the research activities with other professors. Furthermore, you will ensure that the research fits within the research centre's research portfolio. In addition, you will coordinate your research with the various professorships, in consultation with a team of experts from the professional field, lecturer-researchers and other professors. You will publish the knowledge and insights gained, as well as translate them into curriculum content and applications for the professional field.

The research theme is directly linked to the Data Science for Life Sciences master's programme. As a professor, you will be one of the figureheads of this master's programme. Your research results will be used to keep the bachelor's and master's curricula in step with the latest knowledge.

You are adept at being in charge of novice and experienced researchers, as well as acquiring external funding. You are an experienced researcher with a focus on practice and action who is capable of translating research to the professional field. You create connections between teaching, research and the business world, while you are also able to inspire professionals and use research to spark innovation. You are sensitive to organisational values, goals and features, as well as well-versed in weighing the various interests. You are entrepreneurial and innovative in spirit, leading to high visibility in the professional field and a keen awareness of all the latest developments. Thanks to your entrepreneurial spirit, you easily recognise business opportunities and are able to influence them actively. At a personal level, you are able to maintain a healthy balance between sensitivity and professionalism, while also communicating in a pleasant and straightforward fashion.
