Job description

This PhD position in ‘Design of future mobility systems’ is part of the NWO-awarded research project SUMMALab: Smart Urban Mobility MetA Lab. SUMMALab connects and supports experiments on new mobility concepts such as Mobility as a Service, automated driving, car/bike sharing and ride sharing, and related experiments with parking and pick-up and drop off locations that aim to improve the accessibility and liveability of large and mid-sized cities. SUMMALab develops methods to support experiments with ‘short and long term business models’, ‘technical feasibility’, ‘mobility and environmental impacts and inclusiveness’ and ‘scalability’ and develops transport models that provide insight into the impacts of innovative solutions when applied in combination, at higher penetration rates and for larger areas.

You will focus on developing a transport model supporting the design of future mobility and transport systems that fully takes into account the learning experiences from experiments and pilots both in terms of (expected) effects and scalability. In order to support planning and design processes, the challenge is to develop a model that includes the new mobility concepts, reflects a sufficient level of detail, yet can run in seconds/minutes during interactive design sessions. You will collaborate with researchers from the TU Delft, the University of Maastricht, applied research institute TNO and The Hague University of Applied Sciences. Besides that, you will interact in design sessions with the main stakeholders from cities and provinces.

Requirements

We are looking for highly talented and driven candidates. You have:

  • a relevant MSc degree in transportation, mathematics, econometrics or a related applied science field.
  • an analytical approach to problem solving and eagerness to learn new things.
  • a proven background and interest in further developing your modelling and/or programming skills.
  • excellent spoken and written proficiency in English is a requirement. Proficiency in Dutch is desirable.
  • ability to contribute to a stimulating research environment.
  • excellent communication skills and ability to cooperate with both scientists and transport professionals.

Fixed-term contract: temporary.
