Job description

Peptide receptor radionuclide scintigraphy and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy are methods successfully applied in the clinic for imaging and treatment for various cancer types. For this, radiolabeled peptide analogs are applied that target molecules overexpressed on cancer cells. For imaging and treatment with radiolabeled peptide analogs to be successful, high expression of the target molecule on the cancer cells is a necessary requirement. Furthermore, for treatment the radio sensitivity of the cancer cells is another important factor for success. In a preclinical setting the application of radiolabeled peptide analogs often studied in models of primary disease, while in the clinic these radiolabeled peptide analogs will mostly likely (also) be applied in advanced disease. In the case of the latter tumors have been treated prior with other forms of anti-cancer treatment such as chemotherapy or anti-hormone therapy. The aim of the current project is to study the effect of chemotherapy, anti-hormone treatment or the combination of the two on the target molecule expression level and radio sensitivity of the cancer cells.

The PhD candidate working on this preclinical project will design and execute studies to discover the effect of prior treatment on the success of a specific radiolabeled peptide analog for imaging and treatment, validate the results, perform studies to determine how the discovered effects may influence current treatment schedules applied, and study how treatment schedules should be adapted accordingly. The project will involve in vitro cell and tissue assays, in vivo experimentation in mouse models of cancer and histological examination of tumor tissue.

Requirements

You are a highly motivated candidate with a university MSc degree and have outstanding theoretical and experimental research skills, are well organized and result-driven with a strong team spirit. You have strong English skills (both written and oral) and have received excellent scientific training in the field of (molecular) biology, oncology or a related field. Experience with animal studies, radiolabeling and radionuclide imaging will be considered as an advantage.

Being able to present a certificate of good conduct, a valid proof of identity, diploma's and/ or relevant registration such as BIG/ RGS are conditions for the appointment.

Conditions of employment

The appointment is available from November 1st, 2019. You will receive a temporary position for 4 years. The gross monthly salary is € 2.422,- in the 1st year and increases to € 3.103,- in the 4th year (scale OIO). The terms of employment are according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Dutch University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).
