Job description

The Department of Anthropology and Development Studies (ADS) at Radboud University is looking for an Assistant Professor. The research and educational programmes of this department focus on the relationship between diversity and inequality. The prospective assistant professor will be expected to contribute to these research and teaching programmes.

As an assistant professor you will teach courses in the Bachelor's degree programme in Anthropology and Development Studies and also contribute to the Master's degree programme. You will give lectures and seminars, and also supervise students preparing Bachelor's and Master's theses. Furthermore, there are opportunities for you to participate in the interdisciplinary Research Master's programme in Social and Cultural Sciences.

You will conduct ethnographic or mixed-methods and multidisciplinary research on issues related to the central research programme mentioned above. Your research should complement or extend the departments research into diversity and inequality, preferably with a focus on cultural diversity and solidarity in the context of neoliberal international markets. The departments research programme is a joint programme, hence you will be expected to contribute to building bridges between Anthropology and Development Studies. You should also be able to obtain external funding for your research and to attract graduate students.

You will be expected to:

  • Carry out and coordinate excellent teaching in Dutch/English (50%).
  • Be an inspiring, motivating and conscientious supervisor of internships as well as of BA and MA theses.
  • Perform and publish top-quality research (50%).
  • Apply for external funding by submitting research proposals.
  • Collaborate with researchers from the ADS department and the other departments at the institute and with external scholars.
  • Be an inspiring staff member with excellent communication skills.
  • Develop a network of national and international partners.

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree (PhD) in Anthropology, Development Studies or Development Anthropology.
  • An inspiring teacher with expertise in teaching at an academic level in Dutch/English.
  • A university teaching qualification (BKO) or the willingness to acquire such a certificate within two years (with a priority for the module on coaching).
  • Extensive experience with ethnographic and/or mixed methods research and an excellent track record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals and grants obtained.
  • An excellent track record in scientific research, as evidenced by publications in international academic journals.
  • Preferably experience in the acquisition of external funding.
  • A team player with good social, communication and organisational skills.
  • An excellent command of written and spoken English (C1 level).
  • An excellent command of written and spoken Dutch or the willingness to learn Dutch within 2 years.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: upon positive evaluation after 2 years: permanent position;.

  • Employment: 40 hours per week.
  • A maximum gross monthly salary of €4,978 or €5,656 based on a 38-hour working week (salary scale 11 or 12).
  • The exact salary (in scale 11 or 12) depends on your qualifications and relevant work experience.
  • In addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • Duration of the contract: 2 years, with the possibility of extension to a permanent position upon positive evaluation after 2 years.
  • The intended start date is 1 January 2020.

RSCS’s overarching research theme focuses on three topics: inequality, cohesion and modernisation. The Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Anthropology and Development Studies are part of the curriculum of the School of Socio-Cultural Sciences.
