In cooperation with the student representation of the University Council, the Erasmus University Rotterdam will develop a mobile “digital companion” for students to enhance their academic performance and promote students’ wellbeing. The digital application will be positively oriented towards skills building (21st century skills), supporting students’ wellbeing and preventing/addressing common problems in the student population.

The project will run from 2020 until 2024. The project is funded through the investment fund ‘Quality Agreements Higher Education’ and is aimed at improving student guidance. The development of this ‘digital companion’ is embedded in the strategic policies of the Erasmus University Rotterdam (Strategy 2024). Results of the project will be presented to the Dutch ministry of education by the end of 2024.

To support the development of this “digital companion”, there is a vacancy for two PhD candidates who will work on various aspects of the co-design, development and evaluation of such digital program.

Job description

The program will most likely take the form of a mobile application designed for all students enrolled across all faculties, which will provide a performance, health and wellbeing support framework freely accessible 24/7.

The application will be positively oriented towards skills building using a comprehensive approach of content modules, providing contextual support to students’ needs in near to real-time. The mobile platform will include a range of well-designed interactive, evidence-based modules and tools arranged in a stepped care fashion, with universal modules addressing performance potential, skills growth and primary prevention as the first line of care, and more targeted interventions addressing common mental health and behavioral problems as a secondary prevention line of care (i.e., blended care and referral system).

The two candidates will work in synergy in a multidisciplinary team with the task of creating and evaluating the first prototypes of the “digital companion”, but each one focusing on a specific aspect of the overarching project. Both candidates must thrive in dynamic environments with imperfect and/or emerging information, enjoy the challenges that come with working outside of their area of expertise and be comfortable with working in teams.

The PhD position in digital behavior change interventions for wellbeing and academic performance will focus on the translation of behavior change theories and methods into effective contents of the modular interventions, combined with the summative evaluation of the early prototypes in randomized controlled trials. The candidate will collaborate very closely with the other PhD candidate working on the concept design of the digital platform and modules, the team of clinicians, student psychologists and advisors in order to map students’ needs and problems against targeted interventions addressing them, and will be responsible for the systematic evaluation of their effects in the targeted population.
