The Department of Philosophy at Tilburg University seeks to appoint:
Two Assistant Professors Philosophy (each 1,0 FTE)
Starting date approximately August 1, 2020

Job description

The positions
The Philosophy Department at Tilburg University seeks to appoint two outstanding philosophers at the level of Assistant Professor. Alongside principal teaching responsibilities, successful candidates will be expected to grow their good reputation in research and participate in valorization activities. The positions each involve substantive teaching tasks, with courses to be taught at both Bachelor and Master levels. An important portion of these tasks involves teaching philosophy classes to large groups of non-philosophy students (at Bachelor level). Teaching responsibilities and (small) service or management tasks will constitute 60-65 percent of the position workload, which, depending on the size of the groups, comes to 4-5 courses per year. The candidates are expected to acquire a University Teaching Qualification (Dutch: BKO). Teaching responsibilities require the successful candidates to have an excellent command of the English language. Given the Department’s overall teaching needs, societal embeddedness and responsibilities, being able to speak Dutch is a clear advantage. It is welcomed if the candidate is prepared to move to (the vicinity of) Tilburg.

Profile of the candidates
The successful candidates hold a PhD in philosophy. They are natural born teachers, as demonstrated by prior teaching experience or sample lecture (if invited to interview). They can teach philosophy to both philosophers and non-philosophers. It is highly desirable if the candidates can teach subjects outside their areas of specialization (for example on the history of philosophy). The successful candidates find it important to engage with society as a philosopher, for example by participating in public debate. The successful candidates are also excellent researchers. They have a track record of publications in good international journals or show the capability of developing such a record early in their careers (candidates are expected to publish at least 1 article in an A-journal each year and to apply regularly for external research funding). The successful candidates are expected to be full members of the Department of Philosophy and participate actively in one of its research groups (TiLPS and PHC&E). Their research interests will complement the research strengths of the department. It is a clear advantage if the candidates can participate in both of our research groups, or can contribute to the practical and theoretical sections of TiLPS. It speaks for the candidates if they are interested in non-mainstream domains (e.g. feminist philosophy) and have an open eye to what other disciplines can contribute to philosophy.
