Job description

The Power Electronics and Electromagnetic Compatibility Group within the department Electrical Engineering has a vacancy for a Ph.D. researcher to work on EASIER - Electric Aircraft System Integration Enabler. The objective of the project is to investigate challenges presented by aircraft electric propulsion requires the development of new airborne technologies that enable expanding the electrification technology trend already impacting other areas, like ground transportation or the autonomous generation/usage of electricity from renewables, to efficient and economical air transportation. The project is funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Program. Within the project, a strong partnership is established among all members of the EASIER consortium from EU and US who will collaborate following a coordinated plan, with the Industrial Advisory Board: Partners:
1 UNITED TECHNOLOGIES RESEARCH CENTRE IRELAND, LIMITED IE
2 FOKKER ELMO BV NL
3 STICHTING NATIONAAL LUCHT- EN RUIMTEVAARTLABORATORIUM NL
4 UNIVERSITEIT TWENTE NL
5 EVEKTOR, spol. s.r.o. CZ
6 ARTTIC FR
7 EMAG DESIGN Sp. z o.o. Poland
8 United Technologies Research Center US RESEARCH FIELD
Electromagnetic Compatibility, the UT researcher will participate in the following tasks:
Modelling of power systems
Provide measurement and code-to-code based validations that will be used by NLR to validate and tune the developed models

Modelling of miniaturized filters
Create models of nano-crystalline-chokes that can be used in the design of miniaturized filters. The materials used in these chokes ensure a major decrease in volume and weight. Other promising magnetic components may also be evaluated.  Utilize full-wave 3D modelling together with back-annotating field effects in circuit simulations to ensure performance while reducing complexity. Perform validations and tuning of the created model based on measurements and code-to-code validation.

Power quality modelling
Create behavioural models of loads that will be integrated into a larger system.

Analysis and mitigation of conducted and radiated EMI
Select representative subsets of the aircraft electric propulsion system such as the motor drive and motor for propulsion, and the battery interface to the aircraft electrical network, and study them in detail.
Evaluate conducted and radiated EMI on the aircraft electric distribution, targeting input and output filter requirements, shielding of boxes and cabinets, and “silent” power semiconductor device switching behaviour. Design, develop and test EMI mitigation solutions at the interface between the propulsion and the power distribution sections. Predicted solutions consist of active filtering techniques in combination with passive filters, interface connections, shielding of critical noise sources and detuning resonances.
