The Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence (UAI) group is a new and quickly growing group embedded in the AI cluster (AIc) at the Eindhoven University of Technology and aims at developing foundations of AI for the present and the future. This includes the design of new AI methods, development of AI algorithms and tools with a view at expanding the reach of AI and its generalization abilities. In particular, we study foundational issues of robustness, safety, trust, reliability, tractability, scalability, interpretability and explainability of AI.
The UAI group is looking for a highly motivated and skilled PhD candidate to work on Probabilistic Machine Learning. The concrete research direction will be determined together with the successful candidate. Potential topics might be, but are not restricted to:
The position will be supervised by asst. prof. Robert Peharz and the successful candidate will have ample collaboration opportunities within the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, and in particular within the AIc (groups Uncertainty in AI, Data Mining, and Databases).

Requirements
The candidate we are looking for has:
- Master's degree (or about to obtain one in the near future) in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field;
- Excellent analytical skills;
- Excellent coding skills (e.g. Python, Julia, PyTorch, Tensorflow);
- Excellent academic writing and presentation skills;
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken);
- Desire to conduct excellent research and publish in high quality conferences and journals;
- Independent thinker and self-responsibility;
- Ability and desire to collaborate and work in teams;
- Ability and desire to support teaching and to co-supervise bachelor and master students.
Conditions of employment
Being a PhD student in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, every PhD student gets paid a salary; no additional grants are needed. Moreover, although PhD students sometimes take courses, there is no minimum requirement. Hence, PhD students are more like employees than like students. Indeed, the Dutch word for PhD student translates to "research trainee". The work of a PhD student may include assisting in courses of BSc or MSc programs of the department. This amounts to around 10% of the time; the remaining time is spent on research and research-related activities. Foreign PhD students need not speak Dutch: it is easy to get by with English, not only at the university but also in everyday life.
Gross salary ranges from € 2.325 per month in the first year increasing up to € 2.972 in the fourth year. The TU Eindhoven offers a broad package of fringe benefits (e.g. excellent technical infrastructure, child daycare and excellent sports facilities).
