Job description

ChemE recently opened a new facility, Industrial Catalysis Lab (ICL, Building 67), where industry-relevant catalytic and high-pressure reactions up to 500 bar can be safely performed. Together with the labs in the main building of ChemE, ICL offers researchers at TU Delft and industry to advance catalysis science and high-pressure chemistry, catalysing collaborative projects and offering unique opportunities for research and education. Innovation in catalysis engineering demands instrumental innovation, for example designing reactor systems with novel and unique concepts including high-pressure operation with automation and possible use of robotics. To accelerate innovations in catalysis science and to fully exploit the potential of ICL, we look for an internationally competent instrument scientist as a faculty member at ChemE.

We invite applications for a tenure-track instrument scientist position from outstanding early-career scientists interested in instrumentation-driven innovation in catalysis science. Successful candidates are expected to develop an original scientific program towards that direction and offer colleagues cutting-edge and customised experimental tools. In addition, we expect our new colleague to enthusiastically teach and contribute to develop courses in our BSc and MSc programs on catalysis, reaction engineering, instrumentation and/or safety besides supervision of PhD students and postdocs. Strong leadership as well as managing and conducting applied research with industry partners are expected. Successful candidates are also expected to interact synergistically with existing research groups working on catalysis science and reaction engineering.

Specialized staff members are available at TU Delft to support tenure-track instrument scientist in building and strengthening their own research programs and to provide administrative support. Experienced scientists in the Department of Chemical Engineering are ready to act as sounding boards and mentors in discussions on scientific and personal development.

Requirements

We seek an instrument scientist with a good scientific track record, a researcher with a creative and collaborative mentality who appreciates scientific and engineering challenges in innovating catalysis science and who through their research, management skills, and teaching qualities can inspire co-workers and students alike.

The ideal candidate has:

  • A PhD in a relevant area,
  • Relevant post-doctoral research experience,
  • Relevant experience in industry and/or industry projects,
  • A high-quality publication record,
  • A proven expertise in developing instrumentation for catalysis research, in particular for high-pressure reactions,
  • A vision on how to develop a new, independent research line on instrumentation in catalysis science and reaction engineering,
  • A passion for education and coaching of students and early-stage researchers,
  • Proficiency in English
  • Motivation and ability to acquire funding, via public-private partnerships and/or direct industrial funding,
  • Motivation and ability to contribute to organizational tasks of the department.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years with the prospect of a permanent contract.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.
TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.
