Job description

As a tutor you guide first or second year tutorial groups of 11 - 12 students. In a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) environment the tutor is not a teacher in the traditional sense, but a guide. You observe and analyze the group process in the background, you direct or guide if necessary, by using questions, examples or advice instead of giving instructions or information directly. You consider it a challenge to help students understand the material and to encourage their academic thinking.

You will supervise two groups a day, who will meet twice a week at fixed times. The composition of the groups changes after each block of five weeks. The first year tutorial meetings will be on Mondays and Thursdays whereas the second year tutorial meetings will be on Tuesday and Friday. Additionally, you will be a practical skills trainer during the course-related practicals. These practicals (such as an introduction to psychodiagnostics, psychological communication, training trainers) are on Wednesdays. Doing research is not part of your position.

Due to Corona measures, education may be temporarily provided online, and therefore from home. A such, it is important that you have the availability of a quiet working place and a stable internet connection.

In preparation of your duties and responsibilities, you will participate in a tutor training in August in week 33 or 34. For those familiar with PBL (as student or teacher), please inform us in your letter of application.

Requirements

  • A (nearly) finished Master’s Degree in Psychology
  • Proof of excellent language skills in English, such as a being a native speaker or having a CAE or CPE certificate. (For the International Bachelor Program of Psychology, we are specifically looking for (near) native English speakers who can tutor and train the International students in English)
  • Experience with statistics and methods & techniques is a plus (please mention in your letter);
  • Proven affinity with academics, teaching and PBL
  • Availability on the aforementioned days when tutorial and practical meetings take place, as well as the days for training.

You enjoy the experience and challenge of guiding and encouraging groups of first- or second-year students. The success of our program is partially dependent on your enthusiasm and engagement!

Conditions of employment

A varied job in an enthusiastic team with good employment conditions, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO NU). The initial contract will run for a period of 1 year, then there is a possibility to extend up to a maximum duration of 4 years.
