Job description

We are looking for an Assistant Professor who can strengthen our position in the field of Personalised Pharmacotherapy. Central to this discipline is the therapeutic risk stratification of patients based on the integration of knowledge on the drug profile with a patient’s genetic, genomics and clinical/demographical profile. Best choices of selected drug therapies based on pharmacologic and pharmacogenetic information as well interactions with co-medications, notably in polypharmacy, is of growing scientific interest. Predicting responses based on knowledge on the causal pathway of diseases (so-called Systems Biology), in combination with advanced diagnostic tools as therapeutic drug monitoring, will lead to a better selection of pharmaceutical therapy. Further, the development, evaluation and implementation of targeted community or translational pharmacy interventions to improve optimal and sustainable medication use is crucial. The ultimate objective of the discipline is the individual optimisation of benefit-risk profiles as well as the cost-effectiveness and implementation of drug treatments in an ageing society.

As an Assistant Professor, you will:

• set up and develop your own research line and research group
• supervise PhD students
• acquire external funding
• promote the societal relevance of your research
• teach in and contribute to the development of the degree programmes of the Bachelor and Master Pharmacy, as well as the Master's degree programme Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences (MPS)
• contribute to the organisation of the faculty, for example by participating in working groups and committees, in the domains of teaching, research and management.

At the stage of Assistant Professor, 60% of your time is for research, 30% for teaching activities and 10% for organisational tasks.

Department

Faculty of Science and Engineering

The University of Groningen is a research university with a global outlook, deeply rooted in Groningen, City of Talent. Quality has been our top priority for over four hundred years, and with success: the University is currently in or around the top 100 on several influential ranking lists.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) is the largest faculty within the University. We offer first-rate education and research in a wide range of science and engineering disciplines, from classical disciplines such as mathematics, astronomy and mechanical engineering, to interdisciplinary fields such as artificial intelligence, pharmacy and nanoscience. Our community has an open and informal character with students and staff from around the world.

The position we offer will be embedded in the Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy, and specifically in the base unit PharmacoTherapy, -Epidemiology & -Economics (PTEE). We are a dynamic, multidisciplinary group of researchers stemming from the disciplines of pharmacotherapy, pharmaco-epidemiology, pharmacology, and pharmaco-economics. We have close links to pharmacy practice, with an active network and several pharmacists among our staff, and multiple ongoing national and international cooperative projects. We are also active in research focusing on studies using “real world” pharmacy and health care data. We have access to various databases and recently established a collaboration with the Lifelines cohort study, UMCG and our in-house prescription database IADB.nl called the Pharmlines Initiative. This tenure-track position will complement the existing research lines in the department and creates new collaborative opportunities. The UMCG is an important research partner and it is envisioned that the successful candidate will maintain and strengthen this relationship. An integral part of creating new collaborative opportunities, will be building on the existing Pharmlines-collaboration with the UMCG and using this as a starting point to find new research partners within the UMCG, as well as on a national and international level. To this end, the successful candidate will also be embedded in the department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology (CPP, UMCG) for 0.4 FTE to further strengthen the mutually beneficial collaboration that has been built over the past decade.
