Job description

We are looking for an experienced computational linguist with interest and expertise in the technological aspects of both the “back end” and “front end” of NLP research and applications, and their impact on society. The successful candidate will prepare, oversee and teach courses in the context of the Information Science programmes (BSc and MA) at the Faculty of Arts. These might include for example courses on introducing NLP concepts and applications via project-based work, on conversational interfaces, or on web-technology related topics, as well as the supervision of bachelor and master theses on various NLP topics. Expertise areas such as the analysis of linguistic aspects in language technologies, speech and dialogue, the semantic web, and the impact of computational linguistics research on society are particularly welcome. The new assistant professor will be working as part of the Centre for Language and Cognition of the University of Groningen (CLCG), which is the institutional home of all the linguistic research carried out within the Faculty of Arts. The Computational Linguistics group of CLCG provides a vibrant working atmosphere with state-of-the-art research in all major areas of Natural Language Processing.

Requirements

● you have a PhD in one of Computational Linguistics, Natural Language Processing, Language Technology, Artificial Intelligence or related area
● you are keen on conducting high quality research, actively engaging with the national and international research network, seeking external funds, and participating in the group’s activities
● you have teaching experience and expected to acquire relevant teaching qualifications (such as BKO-Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs, Basic Education qualification).
● you like to work both independently and in a multidisciplinary team producing high quality output
● you have the ability to communicate, teach, and perform research in English (CEFR C1 level for reading, listening, writing, speaking)
● knowledge of Dutch is not an entry requirement, but a CEFR B2 level for reading and listening, and CEFR B1 level for writing and speaking are part of the conditions for tenure.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 60 months.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a salary, depending on qualifications and work experience, of a minimum of € 3,746 (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 5,826 (salary scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position
• a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
• an 8.3% year-end bonus
• participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favorable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants and to Dutch nationals who have lived abroad for a long period of time. We offer 232 holiday hours per calendar year for a full-time employment. The faculty will facilitate you with obtaining the requested qualifications for teaching and the Dutch language within two years
• an appointment on a temporary basis for 5 years with the outlook to a permanent contract if you meet the criteria.
