The Department of Microbial Ecology offers a Postdoc position Enhancing Production of Pathogen-Suppressing Volatiles by Indigenous Soil Bacteria.
Project description:
The project, funded by NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences, aims to examine the possibilities to use production of pathogen-suppressing volatiles by soil bacteria as a disease control strategy. The envisioned approach is to stimulate production of pathogen-suppressing volatiles by indigenous soil bacteria. Organic materials containing precursors for production of suppressive volatiles by bacteria will be incorporated in soils. The expected stimulation of bacterial production of pathogen-suppressing volatiles by selected organic materials will be tested by (1) determining the produced volatiles and (2) measuring the effect on growth of plant pathogens. Furthermore, we aim to identity pathogen-suppressing volatiles as well as the bacterial groups and genes involved in their production.
Applicants should have: a relevant PhD in soil microbial ecology, chemical ecology or a closely related field. Demonstrable e experience with microbial metabolomics in an ecological context, microbiome analyses and statistical skills to deal with these data. Experience with bioassays, field trials or practice-oriented research would be an asset. Highly motivated candidate with creative, critical and conceptual thinking skills. Good communication and presentations skills in spoken and written English and the ability to work in a team are essential.
The position is a temporary appointment initially for 1 year and upon satisfaction to be prolonged for a maximum of 4 years (38 hours per week, 1.0 FTE). (38 hours per week).
