NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies is a national and international centre of expertise for interdisciplinary research into the history of world wars, mass violence, and genocides, including their long-term social consequences. In addition, NIOD collects, preserves, and provides access to archives and collections.
From a historical perspective, NIOD Research Department conducts interdisciplinary research into the social impact of war and large-scale violence in the 20th and 21st centuries. The Institute aims to shed light on important developments in recent history in their global context for the benefit of research and society. Research topics are the first-hand experiences of people and their societies, the consequences of the war and violence, how injustice and physical and mental damage can be remedied, and finally, the individual and collective reflection on ‘states of war’ and the long-term effect.
