Job description

In this multidisciplinary project of Mathematics of Computational Science (MACS) and the Complex Photonic Systems (COPS), the focus will be on the development of novel discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Maxwell equations to study the absorption of light in photovoltaic cells. This will require both the development of efficient numerical discretizations and solvers, their implementation in highly efficient parallel solvers, and the modelling of the absorption of light in complex nanophotonic media. The absorption of light is modelled by considering absorption as a sequence of scattering events and wave interference. Our approach shows that energy in (disordered) media is transported via channels, which are computed using a singular value decomposition of the transfer and scattering matrices that are computed using a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the time-­‐harmonic Maxwell equations.

The main research topics are:

I.) The development, analysis and implementation of an efficient higher order accurate discontinuous Galerkin finite element method and multigrid techniques to solve the time-harmonic Maxwell equations discretized.

2.) To compute channels using a singular value decomposition (SVD) and to use these results to study the absorption of light in thin photovoltaic cells.

The research program is funded by and part of the Shell-NWO Computational Science for Energy Research Programme.

Requirements

  • You hold a masters degree in Applied Mathematics or Applied Physics;
  • You have excellent skills and practical experience in one or more of the following research areas: computational mathematics or computational physics, in particular finite element methods for partial differential equations;
  • You possess experience at the intersections of the above mentioned areas;
  • You are fluent in English.

Conditions of employment

You will be appointed at NWO-1 in Utrecht and get the status of junior scientist. You will have an employee status and can participate in all the employee benefits NWO-I offers. You will get a contract for four years. You are supposed to have a thesis finished at the end of your four year term with NWO-I.

A training programme is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need.
