The Amsterdam School of Economics (ASE) of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) currently has a position for a Postdoctoral researcher. 

The position is part of MEFPROC, a transnational research project funded by SUSFOOD2, an H2020 ERA-net co-fund on sustainable food production and consumption. The aim of MEFPROC is to improve sustainability in food processing using ‘moderate electric fields’ (MEF) for process intensification and smart processing.

The postdoc contributes to the project using a behavioral economics approach. She or he will consider the following question: Why does the industry take up sustainable food products at a slower pace than technological progress would justify? MEF processing technologies have been around for some time but have not yet had much traction in terms of uptake by industry. This is in spite of the fact that they are both energy and cost efficient.

The postdoctoral researcher will run online experimental auctions and economic lab experiments to improve our understanding of potential drivers behind the slow take up of MEF processing technologies, including consumers’ relatively low willingness-to-pay for innovatively produced products, senior management conservatism, and stringent anti-cartel law. The auctions will be run on the Veylinx platform and the lab experiments at the CREED lab of the University of Amsterdam.

Candidates should have or be close to completing a PhD in Economics or related discipline.

The postdoc appointment starts off with a one-year contract and will be extended for the remaining project period (two additional years) under the condition of a good-first year evaluation.

The gross monthly salary will be, depending on experience, between €3,475 and €4,757 (salary scale 11) based on 38 hours per week (+ 16.3% holiday and end-year payments).This is based on 38 hours per week and in accordance with the salary scales and the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. 

A substantial reduction in income tax (equal to 30% of taxable salary) may apply to non-Dutch candidates. The UvA offers a very attractive pension scheme.

The position includes a 20% teaching load, i.e., 60 contacts hours a year.

The intended start date is 1 July 2018.

 The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) at the UvA provides academic courses for more than 5,000 students in Economics, Business, Actuarial Science, Econometrics, and a variety of post-doctoral courses. The vacancy is within the Microeconomics section at ASE. The microeconomics section in ASE covers three different research programs: Experimental & Political Economics (CREED), Human Capital, and Markets & Organizations. The microeconomics section is responsible for teaching all microeconomics related courses at the BSc and MSc level. The section also actively participates in the teaching and research activities of the Tinbergen Institute, the graduate school of ASE.
