Job description

The Department of Water Management is actively looking for a brilliant and enthusiastic (Tenure-Track) Assistant Professor who is specializing in physical chemical water treatment, to contribute to our research and education activities starting in 2018. You will cooperate strongly with other researchers and strengthen our department. Your responsibilities include:

• Education: Organizing, and contributing to the courses in the MSc‐track Environmental Engineering. Contributing to development of lecture notes and course material. Supervising BSc and MSc students in close co-operation with relevant parties.

• Research: Initiating and executing new research in one of the fields of Water Treatment (technology development, monitoring and modelling) with focus on advanced water treatment for drinking water supply, water reclamation, advanced or quaternary wastewater treatment, and industrial applications. The potential research areas include but are not limited to membrane filtration, advanced oxidation and adsorption. 

• Valorization: Acquiring funding for research projects through cooperation with the private sector, government and / or EU or Dutch national projects and research grants.

• Organization: Contributing to organizational activities and committees within the Department of Water Management and the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences.

Requirements

The candidate: holds MSc and PhD degrees in a relevant area such as environmental engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, or a strongly related field; Is an experienced researcher and can demonstrate this through publications in scientific journals; Has worked or is open to work on research and applied projects for both government and private sector. The candidate has experience in academic education and / or course programs for engineering professionals. The candidate can generate enthusiasm among students. The candidate has followed educational training or is willing to do so.

In addition, the candidate has a good network that is relevant for the department: e.g. 1) Private sector and governmental organization, 2) an international academic network.      

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Tenure track.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position.

Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences

The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) provides leading international research and education, with innovation and sustainability as central themes. Research and education are closely interwoven and address societal challenges. The Faculty consists of 7 departments: Materials Mechanics Management, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering , Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Watermanagement.

In the Department of Water Management research focuses on water treatment and transport and on understanding water availability and water use. The research strategy is to provide a scientific basis for technology development and decision-making in water-related issues such as water treatment, water transport, urban drainage, flood control, drought mitigation, water quality management and ecosystem management.   

The Department has developed novel technologies, such as membrane processes, and measurement methods such as Distributed Temperature Sensing, new remote sensing data analysis methods and flexible modelling approaches for processes related to water availability, water use and discharge and water treatment. The Department uses a combination of refined laboratory methods and on-site testing to ensure the feasibility of new technologies and methods.
