The Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, invites applications for a Junior Lecturer in Business Analytics and/or Data Science.

Job description

The junior lecturer position is in the Department of Mathematics, falls under the umbrella of  the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and concerns activities within and related to our business analytics programs. The bachelor and master Business Analytics are state-of-the-art programs relying on methods from mathematics and computer science geared towards business applications. Within these programs, there is much attention for the connection between students and their education.
 
We seek a new colleague who is passionate about mathematical education, in particular within the context of business analytics or data science. Personal development, development as a lecturer and academic development are important aspects of the position. Besides teaching, the junior lecturer will
•actively participate in projects to further develop and innovate the education;
•help to further improve the connection  between students and their education by giving personalized advice to students on academic skills;
•have the option to acquire a basic qualification in teaching (‘BKO’);
•have the opportunity to deepen her/his knowledge, to work on academic innovations and to build a portfolio in the context of education as a preparation for various career paths (Lecturer VO, lecturer HBO, policy WO or education professional in the business community).
 
Tasks
The candidate will be expected to
• act as a tutor for first year bachelor students in Business Analytics and participate in the improvement of the tutor program;
• contribute to the educational programs of Business Analytics (bachelor and master);
• supervise internships;
• contribute to the promotional activities for high school students;
• initiate and participate in innovation projects related to educational improvement;
• coordinate administrative tasks in relation with the bachelor and master programs Business Analytics.

Requirements

The successful candidate must have completed a PhD or Master in mathematics with specialization business analytics or data science, or a PhD or Master in a related area (like operations research, statistics, data mining or machine learning), and a proven affinity with education.
In addition, the candidate must
• be an inspiring lecturer;
• have solid knowledge of business analytics;
• possess good organizational skills;
• have strong communication skills;
• be able to successfully collaborate in a team of staff members;
• be fluent in English.

Conditions of employment

The junior lecturer position is ideally suited for starting teachers. The appointment is for 4 years and 2 months, including a period of probation of 2 months. The starting date is as soon as possible.

Salary
The salary will be in accordance with university regulations and, depending on education and experience, will range from a minimum of € 2588,00 gross per month up to a maximum of € 4084,00 gross per month (salary scale 10) based on a fulltime employment.

Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics strives after excellence in research. In the department purely mathematical research is balanced with mathematical research motivated by applications. Researchers at the department are on the one hand active on a fundamental and theoretical level, and on the other hand work in an applied and practical environment with links to many sciences and societal issues. The department has a strong international research staff with expertise in dynamical systems, geometry, algebra and topology, and stochastics (statistics, data analytics, probability). In stochastics the applications range from neuroscience, genetics and forensics to business optimization and finance. The stochastics group is also engaged in the Amsterdam Center for Business Analytics (www.acba.nl), which aims at developing, disseminating and exploiting business analytics and data science knowledge and applications by bringing together businesses and scientific research. ACBA supports organizations to consider, design and undertake applied research studies concerning analytics.
 
The department offers bachelor and master programs in mathematics and in business analytics, as well as a master program in stochastics and financial mathematics. In addition, the department provides mathematics courses for other programs of the Faculty of Science, for programs of other faculties in the university, and for the Amsterdam University College.
