Job description

The PhD project is part of a European Network with altogether 11 PhD projects on cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research, see https://dyvito.wordpress.com/projects-in-brief-and-contacts/ This particular project (PhD IDE, one of two in Delft) is focussed on lighting, its perceptual and optical properties, its effects on appearance, and the development of tools for lighting design. In the last decade we developed a theoretical framework to describe and design static natural light. In this project we will do optical and perceptual studies to extend our framework to include colour and temporal dynamics. The scientific findings will be implemented in lighting design tools that work with light field structures instead of traditional surface illuminances. The other PhD candidate in Delft (PhD EEMCS) will work on lighting design interfaces for virtual product lighting and presentation. The PhD IDE will be working at Industrial Design, in the Perceptual Intelligence lab, under supervision of prof. Sylvia Pont and co-supervision of prof. Elmar Eiseman, and the PhD EEMCS will work at Computer Science, in the Graphics lab, under supervision of prof. Elmar Eiseman and co-supervision of prof. Sylvia Pont. The PhD positions being part of the DyViTo network offer unique possibilities for training: regular network meetings in which generic and highly specialized PhD training will be given by renowned academics; 3-months exchanges abroad will be included for training and collaboration with other partners; a wealth of resources for European training and collaboration.

Requirements

The applicants should have a recent MSc degree in design engineering, experimental physics, experimental psychology, computer science, or a similar field - with a clear interest in lighting perception and design, experimental perception research, photometry and photography, computer graphics, and experimental setups / methods design. Other requirements are: social skills (to work with human observers); teamwork skills; experimental research experience; programming skills; mathematical skills; good scientific writing skills in English and good (English) verbal communication; eligibility according to Marie Curie's rules (NB there are rules regarding your nationality, put simply: you should move here from outside the Netherlands).

Fixed-term contract: Temporary.

Faculty Industrial Design Engineering

The faculty of Industrial Design Engineering is the largest and broadest scientific design institute in the world, with over 2,000 students, more than 6,000 alumni and 300 staff (researchers and lecturers, including designers from industrial practice). The faculty aims to contribute to a better living environment and respond to social challenges by combining human values and desires with technological feasibility and economic viability. The Perceptual Intelligence lab (π-lab) is a multidisciplinary task-force collaboration with 7 staff members, headed by prof. Pont. The lab is unique for its applied cross-disciplinary approach to real-world perception problems and ecological optics of light and materials. Pont built a reputation in scientifically informed lighting design and has a strong network of industrial partners in the lighting community. Facilities include unique, partly custom-built, state-of-the-art photographic and photometric equipment, goniometer, photographic studio, several custom-built lighting setups, stereoscopic imaging, mechanical and electrical workshops with full-time staff, 3D scanning and printing facilities.

The Computer Graphics and Visualization Group was built anew in 2012 and currently consists of 4 permanent faculty members, headed by prof. Eisemann. The group has built a reputation for its research excellence in Computer Graphics and maintains a strong network of industrial partners. The use of high-performance computing for interaction and perception-oriented rendering is a unique aspect of the group.
