Job description

Education
You play a prominent and exemplary role in the approaches to environmental issues in the educational field of social and political sciences. You place the developments in environmental politics and policies in the context of wider developments in governance approaches and in the international context, and develop attractive and high-quality education on this basis. You will be looking for opportunities to further develop multidisciplinary curricula on environmental sustainability. Moreover, you will be supervising and lecturing PhD researchers, as well as students.

Research
You initiate and supervise research in the field of Environment, Governance and Politics and you will be leading and linking environmental and sustainability research themes with other research groups within the faculty and more particularly, contribute to the multi-disciplinary research programme. You publish academic articles in prominent international journals in the field. You develop projects for external funding, partly for financing PhD positions.

Management
You will supervise associate and assistant professors and researchers affiliated with the Chair in their teaching and research. You will be contributing to the management of teaching and research in the GPE department, and fulfilling managerial tasks at the departmental level and NSM level. Moreover, you are expected to provide an active and stimulating contribution to the continual improvement, internationalisation and positioning of the faculty in terms of its educational and research programmes. Requirements

You possess a PhD degree and specialise in social and/or political approaches to environmental questions and challenges. You have proven qualities in contributing to the international, academic discussion on environment, governance and politics, as apparent from publications in prominent international academic journals. You have demonstrated to have a thorough knowledge of recent theoretical and empirical developments in the environmental field, and, more particularly, of perspectives thereon in the social and political sciences.

You have demonstrated to have knowledge of developments in social and political theory, and the relevance of social and politcal theory for research and policy in the environmental domain. You have an explicit view on the synergy between the fields of spatial planning, human geography and political sciences of the environment in education and research, and on the interdisciplinarity between social and natural sciences in the environmental domain. You have ample experience with supervising research projects and programmes, including the supervision of doctoral candidates, and with initiating and supervising externally funded research.

Furthermore, you have a sound reputation as an actor in the academic, societal and governmental network on environmental issues, its most pertinent agencies and organisations and have a broad international orientation in the socio-scientific environmental field. You have ample teaching experience, proven effective teaching skills, the capacity to develop and implement innovative teaching methods, proven ability to supervise the development and implementation of an academic teaching programme. A Dutch Senior University Teaching Qualification or equivalent is required. You are fluent in spoken and written English and (if applicable) willing to attend Dutch language courses and to master Dutch at basic level within a few years. You possess leadership skills, as displayed within academic circles.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: five years, with the possibility of an extension for an indefinite period.

Department

Nijmegen School of Management

The Nijmegen School of Management (NSM) is an academic centre of research and education, focusing on institutional and managerial issues within complex organisations in both the public and private domain. There are seven focus areas within NSM: Business Administration, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics, Political Sciences of the Environment, Human Geography and Spatial Planning. NSM strives for a multi-disciplinary approach whenever possible. Altogether, NSM employs 265 full-time staff, of which 75% are academics.

The Chair of 'Environment: Governance and Politics', the envisaged title of what currently is the chair of Political Sciences of the Environment, is part of the department of Geography, Planning and Environment (GPE). The department has about 50 full time equivalents.

The department has the primary responsibility for the Bachelor’s programme Geography, Planning and Environment and three Master’s programmes: in Human Geography, in Spatial Planning, and in Environment and Society Studies.

The department’s research programme covers issues on the interaction between space, environment and society. Empirical themes of the research comprise international migration, climate change, cross-border issues, regional and urban development, mobility and transport, water management, grass roots initiatives on sustainability issues, and land use planning and governance.
