Job description

The overall aim of the MiRRORS project is to develop a new innovative multi-scale framework for traffic demand and supply estimation and prediction for large road traffic networks using both offline and real-time access to huge amounts of data. The innovation lies in three things. First, we develop hybrid approaches where we combine pattern recognition and classification approaches with state-of-the-art traffic flow models. Second, we develop integrated multi-scale solutions, in which traffic information we estimate on one scale level is used to support and strengthen estimation and prediction on other levels. Third, we develop a distributed approach that is robust and scalable for large-scale road networks

Your tasks are: (1) doing cutting edge research into urban traffic estimation and prediction; (2) supporting the development of the data ecosystem.

Requirements

You hold a PhD degree in computer science, data science or another relevant topic. Experience in transportation is a (big) bonus, interest in understanding urban traffic dynamics is a must. You have a passion for programming and working with data. You're comfortable with data assimilation techniques and know your way around big data storage solutions. You are intellectually creative, you are a team player (e.g. able to collaboratively do research and write papers and support other researchers) but you’re also able to work independently and take responsibility. Naturally, you have an interesting CV, are curious, eager to learn new things (e.g. traffic simulation), prepared to travel, and you have a sense of humor.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 3 years.

TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. Department

Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences

The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) provides leading international research and education, with innovation and sustainability as central themes. Research and education are closely interwoven and address societal challenges. The Faculty consists of 28 sections divided over 7 departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering , Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Watermanagement.

The Transport and Planning Department (T&P, Faculty of Civil Engineering) was awarded the maximum score for all research assessments during the last 15 years. The faculty was ranked second in the latest QS world university ranking. T&P has a strong track record in traffic flow theory, traffic simulation, dynamic traffic management and intelligent transport systems A trademark of the department is the use of empirical data, incorporating human factors and advanced modelling tools. The  group (~100 members) study the whole transportation field, creating opportunities for fruitful collaborations.

You will work in a high profile multidisciplinary project. The traffic data eco system we plan to develop will be unique in the world and you'll have the chance to do cutting each research on the basis of a huge amount of data. The TU Delft is ranked amongst the top when it comes to transportation science, and you will work in the dittlab(.tudelft.nl) group, an interdisciplinary research group of 10-15 people that focusses on the interface of transportation, computer science and data analytics. We value personal excellence as well as contributing to the collective. We believe in sharing data and ideas, and in developing open-source solutions; in having fun together; celebrating success and supporting each other when things don't work out the first time. As a postdoc you get a lot of freedom, responsibility and support to build your career.
