Job description

Delft University of Technology’s faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) is ambitiously developing a state-of-the-art architecture that can control all potential future quantum computational devices. This architecture aims to transcend the specifics of each presently available physical technology (i.e., quantum bits based on electrons, fermions, quantum dots, Rydberg atoms, etc), and to be able to robustly cope with quantum mechanical noise and errors in each technology.

Our aspiration now requires us (1) to create state-of-the-art mathematical models that can accurately describe the propagation of errors and noise in quantum circuits / chips and (2) to design methodologies that can drive a quantum mechanical system from an initial state to a target state, while powerfully leveraging underlying network structures and coping with the uncertainties in practical quantum computing.

To achieve goals (1) and (2), the NAS research group, which is part of the department of Quantum & Computer Engineering (QCE), now invites applicants for a challenging PhD position on the topic of Quantum State Driving under Network Uncertainties. This topic lies on the exciting intersection between network science and quantum computing

Department

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the social relevance of its research programmes. The faculty’s excellent facilities accentuate its international position in teaching and research. Within this interdisciplinary and international setting the faculty employs more than 1100 employees, including about 400 graduate students and about 2100 students. Together they work on a broad range of technical innovations in the fields of sustainable energy, telecommunications, microelectronics, embedded systems, computer and software engineering, interactive multimedia and applied mathematics.

The Department of Quantum Engineering has a double mission. The first is to bring together EEMCS researchers working on quantum computing-related topics. This line of research is intimately connected to QuTech, as the quantum computing researchers of this department are also part of the QuTech research centre. The second is to work on various other computing technologies ranging from single photon detection and liquid silicon to big data, reconfigurable architectures, dependable nano-computing and networking.

The Networks Architectures and Services (NAS) research group conducts research in the broad area of complex networks, ranging from data communications and Internetworking to man-made infrastructures such as road-traffic, biological, brain, social, financial networks, and now, networks of quantum computational devices. Our strengths lie in understanding the structure and function of complex networks through topological and spectral studies, as well as their stochastic modelling.
