Job description

Are you interested in working in an environment that has strengths across the full spectrum of aircraft design, propulsion integration and flight mechanics? Then this might be an excellent opening for you.

You will bring our educational and research activities on flight mechanics of (novel) aircraft configurations to a next level. The approach is to work on system (complete aircraft) level whilst taking into account new developments in airframe layout, propulsion integration, and flight control systems, at the subsystem level. Research in the area of flight mechanics may be supported by experimental research that is performed in the Faculty of Aerospace wind tunnels as well as through free-flying test articles.

Recently, work has been initiated in the field of scaled flight testing, in which the flight mechanical behavior of unconventional designs plays an important role in the development process of future aircraft. You will play a key role in this development.

The FPP section has strong links to the aerospace industry, including Airbus, GKN-Fokker, and Leonardo, as well as research institutes such as NLR, DLR and ONERA. You are expected to efficiently utilize these contacts to define joint research on MSc and PhD level. Teaching responsibilities include two undergraduate level courses in flight mechanics as well as supervising MSc and PhD students. You will maintain your independent research programme in an international context and further develop close relationships with industry.

Faculty Aerospace Engineering

Aerospace Engineering

The Department of Aerodynamics, Wind Energy, Flight Performance and Propulsion (AWEP) is one of four departments composing the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. Experimental and numerical research on a wide variety of topics is performed in the Aerodynamics section. In the Flight Performance and Propulsion (FPP) section the main research areas are: aircraft design, propulsion system design as well as propulsion integration. Additionally, wind energy systems, from small wind turbines to large, offshore installations, are the research areas in the Wind Energy section. The department has access to comprehensive laboratories, equipped with modern wind tunnels and state-of-the-art measurement systems. Furthermore, a computer cluster is available for numerical simulations on complex aerodynamic and physical problems.

Section FPP
This vacancy is within the Flight Performance and Propulsion section where fundamental and applied research in the field of aircraft design, propulsion systems, and their integration is performed. Tools and methodology development for aircraft design is combined with system analysis and design in the area of high lift systems, open rotor propulsion, propulsion system analysis, and design and flight mechanics of unconventional aircraft. Technology development is done in strong interaction with other sections such as Aerodynamics, Aerospace Structures and Materials, and Aircraft Transport and Operation, as well as industry and research institutes.
