Job description

As assistant professor in Public Policy, Migration and Diversity you contribute to research and education at the crossroads of the public policy and migration studies. In both education and research, you take issues of migration and (migration-related) diversity as case studies for the exploration of broader questions relevant to theoretical developments in the public policy. In addition, you contribute to the theoretical development of the field of migration studies as well. You will be positioned in at the Department of Public Administration and Sociology (DPAS).

 

Research- and education tasks
In terms of research, you will contribute to as well as initiate research on issues of migration and (migration-related) diversity from a public policy perspective. You will play an active role in the development of new research projects and the acquisition of research funds (such as H2020, AMIF, JPI, ERC and NWO grants, and other), again at the crossroads of the public policy and migration studies. Furthermore, your research will contribute to and be embedded in the broader research agenda and current research projects in the research group and in DPAS more in general, on Vital Cities and Citizens, on Public Issues and Governance, and on the Governance of Migration and Diversity in particular. 

 

In terms of education, you will contribute both to generic public policy courses as well as to courses that focus more specifically on issue of migration and diversity. This includes generic bachelor programs as Public Administration, Sociology and Management of International Social Challenges (courses as Public Policy, Comparative Public Policy, Policy & Society), as well as master programs as Governance of Migration and Diversity (courses as Politics of Migration & Diversity) and the minor program Migration and Diversity: Governance of Multicultural Societies.

 

The position will consist for 60% out of teaching activities and 40% research activities.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with:
• A completed PhD degree in public administration, public policy, political sciences, international studies, sociology or another discipline or field that is directly relevant to public policy.
• A keen interest in investigating topics at the crossroads of public policy, migration & diversity, preferably demonstrated by previous work on similar topics;
• A keen interest in cross-disciplinary research and/or collaboration;
• A solid background in using a variety of research methods;
• A keen interest in developing new research projects, together with DPAS colleagues, and an eye for funds acquisition; preferably demonstrated by previous efforts in designing new research projects;
• Strong planning skills, ability to manage own and others’ work and related activities, ability to meet deadlines;
• Good research qualities and writing skills, demonstrated for example by the PhD thesis and other publications;
• You are in possession of a Basic Qualification Teaching (BKO) or you are willing to achieve this qualification;
• Good skills in terms of management
• Good writing skills and fluency in written and spoken English;
• Good writing skills and fluency in written and spoken Dutch or willingness to learn Dutch within two years;
• Good communicative skills, proactive and independent work attitude;
• A great curiosity and enthusiasm for scientific research!

Conditions of employment

Employment preferably starts September 1st 2018. The initial contract will run for a term of 2 years, which – depending on performance (such as in education, publications and research acquisition) – will lead to a permanent position. The trial period is two months. The conditions of employment correspond with the CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten (CAO NU). Your remuneration will depend on your specific knowledge and experience, and will be calculated ranging between €3.475 and € 5.405 gross per month, in accordance with scale 11-12 of CAO NU. Salary is based on a fulltime occupation (38 hour per week; 1.0 fte).
The EUR has attractive employment conditions, which include holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary, an end-of-year payment of 8.3% of the yearly salary and 232 hours leave per year (based on a full-time appointment of 38 hours). In case of a working day of 8 hours, you will weekly save 2 hours extra for annual leave (totally 328 hours).

In addition, EUR takes part in the ABP pension scheme, and we also offer partially paid parental leave. Moreover, EUR staff members can make use of the facilities at the EUR campus, including the Erasmus Sports Centre and the University Library. Substantial tax benefits apply to non-Dutch citizens, conditional on permission granted by the Dutch Tax Office. Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB)

DPAS is also one of the initiators of the recent development of an Erasmus Migration and Diversity Institute (EMDI) that further develops cooperation between migration scholars coming from very different departments of Erasmus University Rotterdam.
