The Assistant Professor will undertake research in the area of environmental technology and design, with a preferred focus on the field of modelling and sensing of urban climate and related technology. This comes within the Department’s research theme: ‘Urban Metabolism’. The candidate’s expertise will include state-of-the-art environmental design approaches for the built environment in relation to sustainability, societal trends and technology. The candidate will be able to apply this knowledge in urban environments in an integrated and inclusive way. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment encompassing environmental engineering sciences, (urban) design and social and behavioural science. She or he will also teach and supervise students at BSc and MSc level. The teaching will involve both the MSc track Urbanism of the Department of Urbanism at the Faculty Architecture and the Built Environment, as well as the MSc track MADE of the Amsterdam based Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS). The candidate will be responsible for the supervision of PhD students. 

The position will involve ca. 50% research related work and 50% teaching and there are expected to be strong links between research and education. The post also involves management tasks, acquisition of research projects and academic valorisation. It is deemed essential to build up and maintain good collaboration with the other research groups within and outside the Department while striving for multidisciplinary knowledge and technology integration.

A tenure track position is initially a temporary appointment of high potential candidates, which, if performance criteria are met, will become a permanent appointment that offers an opportunity for progression to associate or full professor. • a PhD degree and postgraduate experience;
• knowledge and academic background relevant to urban climate related research;
• a solid scientific track record demonstrated through academic publication;
• a developing international research and practitioner network;
• affinity with practical implementation of environmental technology & design;
• interest in environmental technology and design and sustainability in the built environment in the European and/or emerging economies context;
• experience in working in multidisciplinary teams;
• a teaching qualification or a willingness to undertake such training;  
• preferably experience in daily supervision of PhD candidates;
• a good command of English and high-level communication skills.

Fixed-term contract: Tenure Track.

At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.

Faculty Architecture & the Built Environment

Since its foundation 110 years ago, the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment has built up a solid international reputation for training architects, urban planners and designers, as well as for its research portfolio and coaching of PhD candidates. With around 2600 students and 500 staff members, with around 230 FTEs devoted to academic positions, our faculty is one of the largest of Delft University of Technology and one of the most prestigious architecture and the built environment faculties globally. Traditionally, the faculty has prioritised high-quality training in design and research in the field of the built environment. Over 40 chairs cover a wide range of academic areas in design, process and technology, which together cover the entire field of the built environment. The faculty has a budget of around €38 million, of which approximately €7 million is sourced indirectly and from contracts with third parties.

Urbanism

The Department of Urbanism in the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment encompasses and combines urban design, spatial planning, landscape architecture and environmental modelling. These areas are represented in the four sections of the department. The Department has a global reputation for excellence in research and education, and is particularly well known for the ‘Dutch approach’ to urbanism that brings together the creativity of design with academic research methods. This ‘integral’ urbanism enjoys high international esteem in professional practice, research and education.

The core of the chair of Environmental Technology and Design (ETD) in the section Environmental modelling at the Department of Urbanism is the Triad people, technology and design. The approach of ETD is strategic in nature and follows the ideal of ‘sustainable value creation’ on a scale larger than that of the different sections, departments or even the faculty itself. In this strategic approach it is not only buildings that are considered but also the urban infrastructure that surrounds them, the products and services delivered, and, most imporantly the people involved. The ultimate goal is to contribute to a scientific network beyond our own disciplinary boundaries, and to create new social cont(r)acts that enable the connectivity we stand for. The work of Environmental Technology and Design includes a renewed examination of ‘urban metabolism’, with a focus on the operational strategies that works towards sustainable development and urban resilience in urbanism. Research and education blends environmental technology, urban ecology, citizen participation and environmental behaviour at different scales. It takes the perspective of urban dynamics and emerging theories of complexity as starting points.
