Job description

European Studies of the Faculty of Humanities has a vacancy for a Lecturer in European Economics

A fixed-term, two-year appointment to carry out teaching duties in European economics in the Bachelor programme of European Studies for the academic years 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21.

Candidates must hold a degree in Economics and should have experience in teaching economics to non-economics students and/or should have a demonstrable background in interdisciplinary teaching and research. Expertise is required to teach Economics courses such as the Economics of European Integration, European Economics (micro and macro), EU economic policy or political economy, as well as more general European Studies courses in e.g. European integration, Research methods or Philosophy of Humanities. Incidental teaching in the MA is also expected.

 

Tasks
  • The development, coordination and provision of teaching in English and preferably Dutch, in the BA and MA programmes, in the area of expertise;
  • supervising BA and MA theses and coaching students;
  • an active contribution to the development and improvement of the broader teaching programmes, regarding didactics and the contents of the programmes, and their evaluation;
  • keeping track of relevant scholarship and integrate new insights into teaching;
  • taking part in committees and working groups, and carrying out departmental administrative tasks as directed.

Requirements

We expect you to have a relevant background in the field of teaching and a proven interest in European Studies, preferably with experience of working in an interdisciplinary environment. We will consider interest and experience with interdisciplinary research and teaching an advantage.

Credentials required:

  • PhD in a relevant research field;
  • solid experience of different forms and levels of delivering university teaching, at BA level, including thesis supervision;
  • the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO, or equivalent), or willingness to acquire this within a relatively short time-frame;
  • experience of digital and audiovisual teaching facilities; affinity with ICT in university teaching;
  • a good team worker and versatile at all levels, capable of multidisciplinary co-operation;
  • good organizational experience and skills;
  • good command of English and willing to learn Dutch; (to become) able to teach in both languages.

Conditions of employment

The appointment will be temporary for two years and will start on 1 February 2019. The UFO profile for this position is Docent 3 (scale 11).
The gross monthly salary will range from €3,475 to €4,757 (scale 11), based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week). The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable.

Faculty of Humanities

European Studies at the Faculty of Humanities is a large and highly successful academic department which operates as a hub for interdisciplinary research on Europe, and provides exciting and popular degree programmes at BA and MA level to over 1,000 students. It successfully connects research and teaching in History, Culture, Politics, Law, and Economics, and focuses both on the EU and on a wider Europe, broader in both time and space.

The BA programme (taught in separate Dutch and English tracks) consists of interdisciplinary core modules like European Integration and National Thought, alongside disciplinary specialisms (Majors) in European History, Culture, East European Studies, European Law, and Economics. There is a close degree of co-operation in all the programmes between historians, culture and literature specialists, social scientists, lawyers, economists. There is a strong and vibrant research culture in European Studies, which is located in the Faculty’s Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES). Individual and small-group research is encouraged and facilitated, including frequent seminars, conferences, funding opportunities and regular research interaction with colleagues across the range of disciplines.

The Faculty of Humanities offers its lecturers many opportunities to teach in a dynamic, research-led context in which exciting new educational methods are being developed.

You will be supervised closely during the first year of your appointment. Additional didactical training is also part of the appointment. Based on your educational portfolio, previously acquired competences will be taken into consideration. The introductory programme may include earning the 'basic training qualification' (BKO).
