Job description

We are keen to meet candidates for two positions in translational biomedical research for in vivo imaging of lipids in atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the largest single cause of death worldwide, and today's treatment options do not account for individual differences, reducing their efficacy. Capitalizing on combined optical spectroscopy and ex-vivo molecular imaging, we aim to develop advanced biochemical diagnostic technologies to guide personalized therapies in patients with atherosclerosis. The full project team will comprise 5-6 people and is embedded in the Biomedical Engineering group, part of the Department of Cardiology.

As a PhD candidate/ Junior researcher you will develop catheter-based optical spectroscopic lipid imaging of atherosclerotic plaques, occurring in the coronary vessels. The presence, distribution and molecular composition of lipids in atherosclerosis provides insight in disease development and may predict future heart attacks. The project involves the design, assembly and optimization of a custom optical coherence tomography system, development of lipid spectroscopy with phantoms and ex vivo tissues, and evaluation of the performance of this system in a clinical setting.
