Job description

The position focuses on air quality and its relation to climate change, using new high spatial resolution satellite remote sensing capabilities. The candidate will initiate innovative satellite remote sensing retrieval techniques using new satellite instrumentation like TROPOMI, as well as exploiting the data for research in the air quality and climate domain. The candidate will also work on innovative concepts for new satellite sensors, together with KNMI and related entities.

You will combine classic as well as new retrieval techniques, for example based on machine learning, to exploit the data from current and future satellite instruments. High spatial resolution, high accuracy data products under challenging retrieval conditions, are considered key developments for the future. For the developed of new instrumentation, the focus is on miniaturized spectrometers for small satellites and high-altitude airplanes.

You will work in close collaboration with the full Professor and Associate Professor who are leading this initiative. Both also work at KNMI and are Principal Investigators of the Dutch-initiated OMI and TROPOMI satellite projects, respectively.

You will initiate and manage innovative research projects, attract research funding, and supervise PhD candidates and post-docs. You will contribute to the Bachelor and Master programmes and take an active part in the organisation and management of the Department and Faculty.

Department

Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences

The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology and delta technology. The research covers global social issues and is closely connected to education as well as the work of a wide range of knowledge institutions. CEG is convinced that Open Science helps to realise these goals and supports its scientists in integrating Open Science in their research practice. The Faculty of CEG comprises 28 research groups in the following seven departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.

The Department of Geoscience and Remote Sensing (GRS) seeks to advance the understanding of dynamic processes on Earth and of human interaction with the Earth, with a focus on geodesy and atmospheric sciences. The approach is based on the development of observation technology as well as the modelling of processes. Our ambition is to create an interdisciplinary research environment in which scientific staff and students explore, learn, and teach. GRS (with about 110 staff members of which 25 faculty staff) conducts a research programme in the disciplines of geodesy and remote sensing, natural geophysics, and climate and atmospheric sciences. It focuses on the interrelation between new observational techniques and applications in engineering and geosciences, including the development of ground-based, airborne, and space-borne methods and models. The department has an internationally leading role in research related to 2D and 3D surveying, satellite remote sensing, natural hazards, geodynamics and climate studies.

Delft University of Technology (TUD) and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) collaborate on several aspects related to weather, climatology and seismology. Specifically for this vacancy, the co-operation on satellite observations of the chemical composition of the atmosphere for air pollution and climate change research is relevant. Initiatives will often be taken in close collaboration with KNMI and other national and international institutes, agencies and companies working in the field of remote sensing of the atmospheric composition.
