Fontys Engineering and Automotive College and Fontys Technology and Logistics College are looking to strengthen the research theme of High Tech Systems and Materials (HTSM) with a Smart Manufacturing professor.

As a professor of the research theme you are responsible for developing the research tracks within HTSM with a focus on Smart Manufacturing. Together with the research leadership and already existing lectorates within HTSM, you ensure the connection between the research tracks of agro-mechatronics, additive manufacturing, adaptive robotics, future powertrain and distributed sensor systems. You are co-responsible for growing Fontys into a serious player in terms of national and international practical research and the place to be within the Netherlands for a technical major with a focus on HTSM. You are the figurehead of Fontys when it comes to Smart Manufacturing. Practical research is executed in collaboration with the colleges’ teachers and students. You coordinate and support the realization of coherent research projects and their integration into the curriculum. You follow the developments in the field and translate them to educational developments, research and activities for the professional market. You supervise and coach the research leadership and build bridges with experts in the field. You represent Fontys with publications within the knowledge domain in recognized (inter)national professional journals and conduct lectures, interviews and/or workshops. You are capable of aligning research and education, thereby contributing to educational development in the field, both in the bachelor and later the master tracks and within the online learning and innovation lab where online education for professionals is being developed. You closely collaborate with teachers and colleagues from other research tracks within the HTSM theme. Research is the innovation engine for education.

A Smart Manufacturing – integrated systems engineering professor with the potential of becoming Fontys’ figurehead in Smart Manufacturing.

This versatile and challenging role demands a driven and entrepreneurial team player. A master in the field, able to inspire principals, teachers and students. Customer and result-oriented action is a requirement as well as the ability to anticipate internal and external changes flexibly. A project leader able to acquire fitting projects and ensure proper execution of projects. A networker well-capable of working independently as well as in a team, and coach others.

An academic with a doctorate degree in a relevant domain with demonstrable knowledge, affinity and research experience in the High Tech Systems domain as well as Smart Manufacturing. Possesses a large national and international network within the research area.
Someone who:

  • Has a good track-record in Smart Manufacturing and especially Integrated System Engineering, preferably in both academic and business contexts;
  • Has a drive to translate research results to applied knowledge, develop instruments for professional practice and support their implementation;
  • Possesses fundamental scientific knowledge of the field and understands the organization of higher (vocational) education and stakeholders;
  • Is an entrepreneurial and expert networker with a demonstrable network in the field, familiar with and known by stakeholders in the High tech Systems world in the Netherlands and beyond;
  • Is an actor in the network of government, knowledge institutions and business;
  • Has experience with public financing and obtaining subsidies;
  • Is a capable persuader of entrepreneurs and an inspiration to teachers and students;
  • Is capable of bridging the research tracks and education.

The Engineering and Automotive college focuses on the knowledge domains of Electrical engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering and Automotive. Our institute has lectorates in Mechatronics and Automotive and two expertise centres: the Centre of Expertise HTSM (High Tech Systems & Materials) and the Automotive Centre of Expertise (together with the colleges of Arnhem, Nijmegen and Rotterdam). Our research has three pillars: Future mobility, Smart manufacturing and Design of High Tech Equipment.

The Engineering and Automotive college consists of around 2,500 students and around 180 employees. Our education can be taken in Dutch as well as English (except Automotive) and around twenty percent of our students come from abroad.
