Job description

The research group Mass Spectrometry of Biomacromolecules currently has its own research lines, next to serving other SILS groups with Mass Spectrometry solutions. In the near future the focus will be shifted more towards serving other SILS research groups, where demand for mass spectrometry solutions increased. Due to an approaching retirement we are looking for an Assistant Professor in Mass Spectrometry.

Job description

The assistant professor will manage the mass spectrometry research facility. You will develop proteomics and metabolomics analysis methods together with these groups, thus enabling dedicated proteomics and metabolomics research with state-of-the-art mass spectrometric instrumentation. You will be involved in teaching BSc and MSc courses, and train and supervise master and PhD students in close collaboration with the PhD advisors (promotors) of the various projects where proteomics and metabolomics play prominent roles.

Requirements

You must hold a doctorate in Molecular Biology or related disciplines with 5+ years postdoc experience in proteomics and/or metabolomics research.

In addition the ideal candidate has:

  • in-depth knowledge of Mass Spectrometry and LC-QTOF, LC-Orbitrap, LC-Triple Quadrupole instruments;
  • hands-on experience on instrument maintenance and troubleshooting;
  • expert level proficiency with database search software such as PEAKS, MaxQuant, Byonic, Sequest, Mascot, etc.;
  • knowledge of associated proteomics and metabolomics software suits, customized quantification technologies and reporting capabilities;
  • knowledge of data statistics and bioinformatics;
  • problem-solving skills, and capability to apply knowledge and experience to address complex challenges;
  • hands-on experience in mass spectrometric assay development;
  • understanding of client applications and the capability to design solutions to suit clients' needs;
  • ability to manage, analyse, and interpret mass spectrometric data and to communicate results to clients and peers;
  • the drive to keep current with new developments in the field to advance knowledge and facility capabilities;
  • the ability to train students and users in state-of-the-art proteomics and metabolomics research skills;
  • fluency in English. The Dutch language must be mastered at least at level B2 within 2 years.

Know-how of data post processing applications such as R, MatLab, MetaboAnalyst, XCMS, Perseus and metabolite identification procedures is preferred.

All permanent staff are required to have a University teaching qualification (the so-called Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs, BKO). If you do not yet have this qualification, it should be obtained during the probation period.

Conditions of employment

We are aiming at a starting date around 1 January 2019. The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of 2 years, during which you should show your competence in science and teaching.

If, after satisfactory evaluation, you have proven yourself to be qualified for the position, a permanent contract will then be offered. Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will be between €4,210 and €5,405 (scale 12). The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities  is applicable. There are also secondary benefits, such as 8% holiday allowance per year and the end of year allowance of 8.3%
