The School for Mental Health and Neuroscience has an outstanding opportunity for a PhD position to investigate the anatomical substrates underlying Parkinson’s disease (PD) symptoms in humans. Your working place will be the department of Neurosurgery and Neurology at the MUMC.

Job description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and self-driven candidate to join a research project funded by a large asset management fund (Weijerhorst). The project will investigate the neuroanatomical alterations in PD brain and correlates with different disease phenotypes using the dual techniques of ultra-high-field MRI (7T and 9T) and histology (immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization) and advanced microscopy. The position involves a fulltime temporary appointment for 4 years.

Starting date: October-2018

The imaging work will be conducted together with the Scannexus Center for Neuroimaging and histology/microscopy.

Requirements

PhD candidates will be expected to have programming experience (e.g. MATLAB) and a Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. Neuroscience, (Neuro) Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Computational Neuroscience, Physics). Experience with biology and neuroscience would also be considered a plus. Knowledge of state-of-the-art data analyses techniques and neuroimaging software, including FreeSurfer, FSL, SPM is also appreciated.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

Temporary employment for the period of max 4 years. Monthly salary is € 2.222,- gross/ month in year 1 up to € 2.840,-  in year 4 according to the PhD-student salary scale. Each year an evaluation will take place.
