Job description

We invite applications for a faculty position in the Department of Physics of Utrecht University, to strengthen and broaden the research programme of the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research (IMAU) in the area of Earth System Modelling, with applications in Atmospheric Dynamics. The position is co-funded by the Department of Physics and the Netherlands Earth System Science Centre (NESSC). The position intends to further enhance the use of Earth System Modelling with applications in Atmospheric Dynamics at IMAU and in NESSC, specifically using the Community Earth System Model (CESM). CESM support for this position consists of 1.0 FTE permanent general support, and 0.5 FTE dedicated support for the first five years.

The successful candidate will join the IMAU of the Department of Physics of Utrecht University and is expected to develop a research program on Earth System Modelling with applications in Atmospheric Dynamics, in collaboration with other existing research groups at IMAU (Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry, Coastal and Shelf Sea Dynamics, Ice and Climate, Oceans and Climate) and with researchers of NESSC (e.g. Paleoclimate Dynamics). The specific focus on Atmospheric Dynamics is required in view of maintaining a healthy balance in (future) IMAU research and teaching activities.

The candidate has a keen interest in Earth System Modelling with applications in Atmospheric Dynamics. S(he) has a talent for outreach and will actively contribute to NESSC and Utrecht University's strategic research theme Sustainability. A strong commitment to teaching is imperative. As a teacher, s(he) will play an active role in the Buys Ballot research school and the undergraduate and graduate education in Atmospheric Dynamics.

  • has a proven track record in the field of Earth System Modelling with applications in Atmospheric Dynamics;
  • is expected to develop an independent research group largely based on external funding, and is able to initiate and foster local, national, and international collaborations;
  • is committed to high-quality teaching at the BSc, MSc and PhD levels; for this, within two years after the start of the appointment the candidate is expected to meet the requirements for the basic teaching qualification (BKO).

Publication track record, teaching record, and acquired research funds will be weighed against the number of years of academic experience, also taking into account parental leave.

Conditions of employment

The candidate is offered a tenure track position, which will be subject to a mid-term evaluation after approximately 2,5 years and a final evaluation after five years. If the evaluations are positive the position becomes permanent. The criteria to be met and the details of the track will be mutually agreed upon before the appointment starts but will include success in research and education. Salary ranges between €3,111 and €5,405 (scale 10/11/12 Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) gross per month for a full-time employment.
