Job description

Erasmus University College (EUC) invites applications for a Tutor position (0.5 fte) for its Life Sciences department.

Job description
As a Tutor you will be assigned to guide up to four groups of approximately 12 students each, in one or two courses during each so-called Quad period in the academic year of EUC. You are required to do so in a way consistent with EUC’s educational philosophy of problem-based learning. EUC designates the weekly sessions, in which you are required to guide your assigned students in their learning, as tutorials.

Additionally, EUC tasks its tutors:
 To reflect on the professional development of students during the academic year;
 To perform corrector duties regarding assessment work during the courses;
 To guide and/or instruct small groups on lab skills;
 To assist in recruiting events, such as the Open Days and ‘Experience EUC’;
 To take part in the interviews that EUC schedules with applying students;
 To support the Life Sciences department with assistance on the development of courses and/or the supervision of Capstone projects by students.

Requirements

 You hold at least an MSc in (Medical) Biology or Life Sciences; PhD candidates are especially asked to apply;
 You are willing and able to guide tutorial groups on a wide range of subjects, as offered by not only the Life Sciences-department, but also the departments of Humanities, Social & Behavioural Sciences and Economics & Business;
 You have at the very least demonstrable affinity with teaching; however, some relevant teaching experience is preferred;
 You are proficient in mathematics and statistics;
 You have excellent communication skills and you are highly proficient in the English language (at least C1 level in the CEFR, C2 level is preferred);
 You look forward to becoming a proactive member of a stimulating academic community that is the hallmark of a university college;
 We explicitly invite international candidates to apply for this vacancy.

Conditions of employment

The new Tutor is invited to join Erasmus University College starting August 13, 2018. Contracts will initially be running for a period of one year, with a possible extension.

The workload for a member of the academic staff at EUC is not evenly distributed across the academic year. Do expect a relative higher workload during the periods classes are scheduled (so-called Quads) and a relative lower workload during the remaining months, so plan accordingly. Lecturers and Tutors are also required to be flexible with their working days, as the scheduling by EUC of all tutorials is dominant and by its nature quite inflexible. As it is highly disruptive and next to impossible for EUC to change its schedule you will be required to ensure and confirm your availability for all tutorials. Weekly work meetings for preparation, coordination and reflective purposes require your attendance as well.

The conditions of employment comply with the ‘CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten/Collective Agreement Netherlands Universities (CAO NU)’. Salary is subject to know-how and experience and will be within salary scale 10 (starting at € 2,588 gross salary per month for a fulltime position). Starting salaries tend to be near the lower end of the scale.

Erasmus University has attractive employment conditions, which include a holiday allowance of 8.0%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and a considerate amount of vacation days. More information is available at https://www.eur.nl/en/working/hr-information.
