Job description

The Design Engineering Department at The Delft University of Technology seeks candidates with outstanding academic credentials and compelling research vision for tenure-track faculty appointments in the areas of the Internet of Things and Ubiquitous Computing. We seek candidates with an outstanding track record in research, and a strong interest in developing a technology-focused research agenda within a human-centred design context. The position will be filled primarily at the Assistant Professor level.

 We are particularly looking for candidates with an experimental research background. Areas of interest include:

  • Intelligent/adaptive/autonomous systems
  •  Intelligent interfaces and user experiences
  •  Multi-Sensory systems
  • Sensor-based behaviour modelling
  • Data-intensive systems
  • Digital fabrication
  • Methods and tools for developing ubiquitous IoT systems
  • Artificial intelligence methods and systems
  • People-centred privacy, safety and quality of IoT systems
  • Application focused research in areas such as health, well-being, mobility, sustainability and smart cities

The Design Engineering Department, part of the Industrial Design Engineering Faculty, comprises more than twenty faculty members with research interests in intelligent products, internet of things, digital fabrication & 3D printing, data-intensive systems, augmented reality, human-robot collaboration, sustainability cand Research through Design. Our research combines traditions from computer science, human-centred design, product engineering, material science, and behavioural sciences, and leverages strong collaborations with the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions, TU Delft Robotics Institute, TU Delft AI Initiative and others. The Industrial Design Engineering Faculty has a PhD program, three master’s programs, and an undergraduate bachelor program with a yearly intake of over 300 design students.

 Candidates are expected to develop an independent research profile related to the Internet of Things or Ubiquitous Computing, and to contribute to the Faculty’s technology education on the bachelor and master level.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree (computer science, electrical engineering, human-computer interaction, industrial design or another qualifying background) and have a demonstrated ability to conduct outstanding research and education. We are looking for candidates with a technology-focused, human-centered research agenda and a strong interest in interdisciplinary research in a design context. Applicants should also have a strong interest in engaging with commercial partners, non-profit organisations and government aimed at technology commercialisation or societal impact.

Furthermore, we ask for the following qualifications:

•              A proven track record in research, and a career that allows successful applications for individual grants such as VIDI/VICI.

•              Proficiency in developing and prototyping sensor-based, distributed, cloud-based systems 

•              Demonstrated interest or experience in teaching and development of academic education (at the BSc and MSc levels).

•              Affinity with research at the interface of academia and industry, and with working in multidisciplinary teams.

•              Excellent English language skills (writing and presenting).     

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Tenure Track.

 At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.

Faculty Industrial Design Engineering

The faculty of Industrial Design Engineering is the largest and broadest scientific design institute in the world, with over 2,000 students, more than 6,000 alumni and 300 staff (researchers and lecturers, including designers from industrial practice). The faculty aims to contribute to a better living environment and respond to social challenges by combining human values and desires with technological feasibility and economic viability. The candidate will be involved in the scientific research and network of the Internet of Things and Intelligence group in the Department of Design Engineering, Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft. The group pursues ground breaking research in human-centered design and development of Internet of Things products and serviecs. We are a rapidly expanding group with an excellent facilities for experimental research on the intersection of the Internet of Things, digital fabrication and human-centered design.
