Job description

The Behavioural Science Institute (BSI) and the School of Pedagogical and Educational Sciences (PWO) seek an experienced candidate for the position of assistant professor.
 
As an assistant professor you will for your teaching participate in the educational programme of Pedagogical and Educational Sciences. This involves teaching in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes and the supervision of Master’s theses and internships. In addition, you will be involved in the evaluation of the educational programme and formulate proposals to improve the programme.
 
For your research you will work within the Learning and Plasticity programme. Here, you will build on your own research programme, preferably on themes related to learning problems and/or individual differences, or other themes within the Learning and Plasticity programme. The Learning and Plasticity programme focuses on how children learn - especially on the individual differences between students and which educational needs they have - and subsequently on how differentiated education can be implemented in practice. Learning and Plasticity has three broad themes: learning problems and giftedness, developmental disorders and differentiated education.
 
Your research work also involves the submission of proposals to attract external funding. In this position, your duties will include teaching (50%) and research (50%).

Requirements

  • a PhD in pedagogical sciences, educational sciences, developmental psychology, or a related field;
  • at least 5 years of postdoctoral experience in research and education;
  • a distinctive research line that aligns with the Learning and Plasticity programme, preferably in the area of learning problems and/or individual differences, evidenced by international publications and acquired grants;
  • ample teaching experience in the area of pedagogy or educational sciences and a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ);
  • excellent understanding of spoken and written Dutch;
  • an excellent command of spoken and written English.

Conditions of employment

  • employment: 0.8 - 1.0 FTE
  • depending on your qualifications and level of experience, the gross monthly salary will be between € 3,545 (min. scale 11, starting scale) and € 5,513 (max. scale 12), based on a 38-hour working week
  • in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus
  • duration of the contract: 2 years, with a view to permanency depending upon performance

Faculty of Social Sciences
The Behavioural Science Institute (BSI) is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The BSI is a multidisciplinary behavioural research institute in which researchers collaborate across the boundaries of psychology, educational science and communication science.
 
It has seven research programmes covering three main research themes: (1) development and learning, (2) psychopathology, health and well-being, and 3) social processes and communication. The BSI conducts applied/translational research as well as fundamental research. The BSI Graduate School (recognised by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) is responsible for the training of PhD candidates. The BSI has state-of-the-art research facilities for observational studies, experiments, eye-tracking studies, EEG measurements and GSR recording, psychobiological research, and behavioural measurements in both real and 3D virtual environments.
 
The School of Pedagogical Sciences (PWO) currently has about 1,000 students. The PWO study programmes focus on questions concerning parenting, education, learning, and typical and atypical development of children and adults. The School advocates the application of pedagogical and educational knowledge in scientific research according to a scientist-practitioner model. The study programmes were rated as excellent in a recent survey among students.
