Job description

PhD project "Polynomial optimization problems in Operations Research and Finance". 

The department of Econometrics and Operations Research of the Tilburg School of Economics and Management at Tilburg University is looking for an enthusiastic colleague for a PhD position on the project "Polynomial optimization problems in Operations Research and Finance".

This project forms part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action Innovative Training Network POEMA (Polynomial Optimization, Efficiency through Moments and Algebra), that is a research and training network funded under the Horizon 2020 programme. POEMA involves 11 academic and industrial partners and three associate partners.

Requirements

The PhD candidate holds an MSc or research master in a relevant area (mathematics, operations research, computer science, industrial engineering, etc.) with good quantitative skills and programming skills. The candidate is fluent in English, and good professional communication skills.

 

In addition you are only eligible to apply for this position if:

  1. you have not resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc) in The Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to your recruitment;
  2. at the time of recruitment, you are in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of your research career (after having obtained your M.Sc. degree) and have not been awarded a doctoral degree

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 3 years.

Tilburg University is rated among the top Dutch employers, offering excellent terms of employment. The collective labor agreement of Tilburg University applies. The selected candidate is expected to have written a PhD thesis by the end of the contract (which may be based on publications). 

 

The PhD candidates will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as a PhD-researcher with a starting salary of € 2.266,- gross per month in the first year, up to € 2.763, - in the third year (amounts fulltime). The holiday allowance is 8% (paid in May), the end-of-year bonus is 8.3% (paid in December).

 

In addition, the candidate will receive a mobility allowance of about €600 Euros/month and a family allowance of about €500 per month, where applicable.

 

The selected candidate will be appointed for 3 years.

 

All university employees are covered by the so-called civil servants pension fund (ABP). Researchers from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf. The university offers very good fringe benefits (it is one of the best non-profit employers in the Netherlands), such as an options model for terms and conditions of employment and excellent reimbursement of moving expenses.

The Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM) is the largest school of Tilburg University. The department of Econometrics and Operations Research offers an internationally oriented and lively research environment aiming for top quality with approximately 45 staff members and 35 PhD students. Most researchers have a strong quantitative background in mathematics and statistics and have reached international reputation in key areas of business and economics like operations research, quantitative finance, actuarial science, econometrics, mathematical economics and game theory.
