As a PhD candidate you will conduct evaluation research on how six European research and education institutions are developing and implementing self-tailored Gender Equality Plans (GEPs). These institutions are do so using the GEAR tool (see link below).
The central research question is:
How does the development and implementation of GEPs impact on gender inequality in research and education institutions? More particular, how does this development and implementation impact on the recruitment of women and their careers, on an inclusive climate, on participation of women in decision making and representation, on the integration of gender perspectives and gender knowledges in research, and on challenging gender roles? The research will contribute to our understanding of the role of organisational equality cultures and structures in enhancing or limiting the development and implementation of GEPs.
The PhD project is part of a larger research project (GEARING-Roles, co-ordinated by Deusto University Bilbao) that contributes to our knowledge on how inequalities are reproduced and countered in organisational processes. We have a specific interest in change processes and their dynamics.
Your tasks will be to conduct evaluation research within the GEARING-Roles project, using ex-ante, ex-post and design evaluation methods, to write scientific articles, and to complete a PhD dissertation within four (or five when working 80%) years. You will also participate in conferences, workshops, seminars and other scholarly activities, and contribute to teaching.
The intended start date is 1 March 2019.

Nijmegen School of Management
The Nijmegen School of Management (NSM) is an academic centre of research and higher education at Radboud University, focusing on institutional and managerial issues concerning complex organisations in both the public and private domain. It contains seven disciplines: Business Administration, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics and Business Economics, Social and Political Sciences of the Environment, Human Geography, and Spatial Planning. The NSM strives for a multidisciplinary approach whenever possible. The NSM employs 260 FTEs, of whom 75% are academics. The NSM currently has approximately 4,200 students.
You will be part of the Institute for Management Research (IMR) at Radboud University. The IMR aims to create knowledge for society and carries out state-of-the-art research into complex problems of governance and management in order to explain the causes of these problems, and to use that knowledge to create potential solutions. The IMR hosts researchers from business administration, economics and business economics, geography, planning and environmental sciences, and political science and public administration. The problems they study often call for a combination of knowledge and expertise from multiple disciplines, and for collaboration with societal relevant actors.
Within the IMR you will be part of the research hotspot Gender and Power in Politics and Management (GPPM). This research hotspot examines mechanisms underlying gender inequality and diversity and aims to produce knowledge that can support organisations or policymakers in designing successful policies and practices to achieve gender equality. GPPM researchers have extensive experience in participatory action research and in evaluating policies and interventions. Additionally, they are developing training curricula and workshops for diversity professionals, administrators and managers.
