Job description

  • Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, in tutorial, lecture and seminar formats, and supervision of theses at BA History, BA African Languages and Cultures; MA African Studies; BA International Studies;
  • Supervise tutorial groups on Africa in the BA International Studies;
  • Do original research and regular dissemination of the results through appropriate channels;
  • Apply for research funding;
  • Do administrative and coordinating duties, commensurate with career stage;
  • Be involved in representation of the field to external audiences and media;
  • For this position we are specifically looking for candidates willing to apply innovative teaching and research methodology in the Humanities.

Requirements

  • A PhD degree in History;
  • A specialisation in African Studies;
  • A publication record that is commensurate with career stage;
  • Proven experience in teaching at university level, including formal teaching evaluations;
  • An excellent command of English;
  • If the lecturer does not speak Dutch, it will be required to acquire sufficient proficiency in Dutch within two years from taking up duty;
  • Upon appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, the lecturer is required to obtain a nationally standardized teaching skills certification.  

Conditions of employment

The appointment is for 30.4 hours per week in temporary employment for two years, with the option for an extension to a permanent contract. The rank of lecturer corresponds roughly to that of assistant professor in North-American terms. The salary is in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch Universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience, the gross monthly salary is €3,637 to €5,656 (pay scale 11 or 12) based on a full-time position.

Depending on qualifications, the appointee may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until he/she fully meets the requirements for scales 11/12 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience.

The Faculty of Humanities is rich in expertise in fields such as philosophy, religious studies, history, art history, literature, linguistics, international studies and area studies, covering nearly every region of the world. With its staff of 930, the faculty provides 27 masters and 25 bachelors programmes for over 6,000 students
The lecturer will hold a position in the Institute for History and will participate in the teaching section Africa. At the institute teaching and research are combined. The section Africa colleagues teach in different teaching programmes: BA African Languages and Cultures, MA African Studies, BA International Studies, MA International Relations.
