Job description

The primary tasks of the Student Counsellor are to:

  • Give students 1-on-1 guidance and counselling, in both personal and academic issues;
  • Prepare students for the requirements of various transitions over the course of their studies at EUC (i.e. starting up, the binding study advice, declaring a Major, considering an exchange, preparing for the Capstone project);
  • Help design and implement relevant EUC policies;
  • Signal and respond to the needs of the student cohorts (i.e. by identifying & sharing academic best practices, giving workshops and/or talks on relevant topics);
  • Advocate for a student when needed;
  • Work closely with the colleagues of the CASA-team, as well as with other colleagues within both EUC (such as the Office of Student and Educational Affairs, the Student Life Officer, the Career Advisor, the Examination Board and the Heads of the academic departments) and EUR (Student Psychologists and study advisers from other faculties) where necessary.

Requirements

  • You have a Master’s degree or equivalent, as well as formal training in individual counselling;
  • You have demonstrable post-graduate experience in guiding people (such as counsellor, psychologist, advisor, coach) and you are passionate about working with students;
  • You have relevant experience working in an (higher) education environment (preferably at least two years);
  • You are verifiably empathic, culturally sensitive, open-minded and highly resilient;
  • You have a hands-on and result orientated mentality, you excel in teamwork, but can work well independently;
  • You have excellent communication skills and you are highly proficient in the English language (either English is your native language, or you are at least certified at C1 level in the CEFR, though C2 level is much preferred);
  • You are proficient in the use of office software (i.e. MS Word, MS Excel & MS Outlook);
  • You are looking forward to becoming a proactive member of a stimulating academic and international community that is the hallmark of a university college.

Conditions of employment

EUC will consider applicants who are able to fulfil the vacant position for 0.7 fte (28 hours) per 1 August 2019 (or earlier if possible). Contracts will initially be running for a period of one year, with the possibility of extension.

Due to the need to have at least one Student Counsellor from the CASA-team on duty every day of the week, as well as due to the necessity to have at least one fixed weekday that all Student Counsellors are available for work meetings and peer counselling, flexibility regarding work days is a key requirement.

The conditions of employment comply with the ‘CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten/Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO NU)’. Salary is subject to relevant experience and will be within salary scale 9 or 10. Erasmus University Rotterdam offers attractive terms of employment, including a holiday allowance of 8%, a year-end payment of 8.3% and 41 annual leave days in case of a full work week. In addition, EUR takes part in the ABP pension scheme, and we also offer partially paid parental leave. For international spouses we have set up a dual career programme. Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB)

The Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences is home to a vast diversity of scientific disciplines: public administration, pedagogical sciences, psychology and sociology. In addition, the Erasmus University College, IHS, and two research institutes RISBO and DRIFT are linked to the faculty. This also reflects in the content of the (international) bachelor's and master's programs and in research.  Our activities are always focused on people and society. Erasmus University College (EUC)

EUC offers the international undergraduate programme in Liberal Arts and Sciences. The 700 students in our programme have a large degree of freedom regarding the courses which they can chose from our expansive curriculum and from what is offered by our exchange partners.

The Counselling, Advice & Study Abroad (CASA) team of EUC provides counselling to our students, guides our students on their study choices and study progress, and administers our ever-increasing exchange network. CASA’s mission is “to facilitate the best possible intrinsic development of our students in a safe environment, allowing them to maximize their performance”. CASA also infuses the students of the importance of the IPP-ethos, meaning that students are expected to be Informed, to be Prepared and to be Proactive. As a Student Counsellor you will be working closely together with three other Student Counsellors. Besides the 4 Student Counsellors the team also consists of a Career Advisor & Alumni Officer and an Exchange Assistant. 

CASA is part of the Dean’s Office, which also consists of the Office of Student & Educational Affairs (OSEA), the Marketing, Recruitment, Admissions & Integration team (MRAI) and the secretariat. The Dean’s Office is headed by the Managing Director of EUC. At EUC the Dean’s Office collaborates closely with the Dean, the four Heads of Department (Humanities, Economics & Business, Life Sciences and Social & Behavioural Sciences) and the Examination Board. Outside of EUC the Dean’s Office coordinates with the colleagues at the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, as well as at the level of the university and with various external partners.
