Job description

As Assistant/Associate Professor of System Dynamics (SD) you will be part of the chair group of Research and Intervention Methodology at the Department of Business Administration. You will be expected to contribute to research and teaching on SD, intervention methods such as group model building, multiple scenario analysis, decision analysis and management flight simulators. You will use quantitative and qualitative empirical research methods and integrate your research and the use of these methods into BSc and MSc courses.
 
The chair group’s ambition is to become an international centre of expertise on multidisciplinary research concerning the involvement of stakeholders in strategic decision making. The chair group is coordinating some of the activities of the IMR Labs, e.g. the Skills Laboratory and those of the IMR Decision Laboratory. Teaching and research revolves around the activities of these two IMR laboratories. The SD approach in Nijmegen is based on traditional facilitated modelling and group model building. This focus on combining problem analysis with stakeholder involvement is the foundation for the group’s close collaboration with the other departments of the Nijmegen School of Management. The European Master’s programme in SD (EMSD) is one of the chair group’s main teaching products. You will become the programme’s academic director. At present, the programme finds itself in a transitional phase as EU funding for scholarships is being phased out and company funding is increasing. You will be expected to lead this transition.
 
You will be expected to perform the following tasks:

  • coordinate and teach high-quality courses in the BSc and MSc programmes of Business Administration, e.g. courses in SD, and lead the EMSD and Business Analysis and Modelling programmes;
  • function as the academic director of the EMSD programme and coordinate fundraising;
  • conduct research in the fields of SD, operational research and dynamic decision making;
  • publish in international academic journals;
  • engage in networking with academic and non-academic partners;
  • acquire, develop and supervise PhD projects;
  • successfully obtain research funding;
  • support the full professors in coordinating teaching, research and administration activities in the Methodology group;
  • contribute to the management of the department and/or NSM.

Requirements

  • a PhD degree in social sciences;
  • proven ability to supervise PhD candidates;
  • an excellent reputation in SD, evidenced by a publication record in internationally recognised high-quality journals;
  • experience in related disciplines such as group decision making and facilitated modelling is welcomed;
  • a track record of attracting research funds;
  • at least four years of experience in academic teaching and research in the field of SD, operational research, responsible and sustainable organising and dynamic decision making;
  • proven effective teaching skills evidenced by a Dutch senior university teaching qualification (UKO) or equivalent;
  • substantial international experience and network;
  • excellent English language skills and a willingness to learn Dutch.


Your reputation should be evident from your CV and publication record. As the group wishes to foster cooperation with other departments of Business Administration, it would be a definite plus if you are familiar with theoretical discussions in these fields and with multidisciplinary research.

Conditions of employment

  • employment: 0.8 - 1.0 FTE
  • a maximum gross monthly salary of € 5,656 based on a 38-hour working week (salary scale 12)
  • the salary is dependent on qualifications and experience
  • in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus
  • term of contract: fixed-term contract for two years. Possibility of extension and permanency depending on your performance
  • you will be classified as an Assistant Professor (Universitair docent), Level 1 in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO)
  • second university job profile: Associate Professor, Level 2

Nijmegen School of Management
The Nijmegen School of Management (NSM) is an academic centre of research and higher education, focusing on institutional and managerial issues within complex organisations in both the public and private domains. There are seven disciplines within the NSM: Business Administration, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics and Business Economics, Social and Political Sciences of the Environment, Human Geography and Spatial Planning. The NSM strives for a multidisciplinary approach where possible. Altogether, the NSM employs 265 FTEs, 75% of whom are academics.
 
Both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are organised in the NSM’s educational institute. The educational programme is characterised by small-scale teaching and provides a stimulating learning environment with an emphasis on the development of academic skills. The NSM currently has approximately 4,500 students.
 
The NSM’s research activities fall under the responsibility of the interdisciplinary Institute for Management Research (IMR). Under the motto ‘Creating knowledge for society’, the IMR focuses on academic research into the development, design and effectiveness of the public and private structures that regulate, govern or manage human interactions. The debate on the fundamentals of academic research in the domains covered by the NSM is organised in the IMR Academy; the PhD programme is organised in the IMR Doctoral School and the IMR research programme is built around six multidisciplinary research themes linked to strategic and scientifically and societally relevant issues, including European Policy, Gender and Diversity, International Conflicts and Policy, Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Business Ecosystems, Integrated Decision Making, and Governance and Innovations in Social Services. Research groups working on these themes consist of researchers from different disciplines. IMR hosts the Individual Decision lab and the Group Decision lab. , which are especially suited for studying collaboration in complex contexts and collective decision making.
