The Faculty of Law of Maastricht University has a vacancy for an Assistant Professor of European Law (1,0 fte) (Tenure Track)

Job description

The Department of International and European Law of the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University intends to appoint a fulltime Assistant Professor of European Law (‘Universitair Docent’) with a starting date of 15 August 2019. Applicants must have proven expertise in European law. The appointee will be required to teach at bachelor and master level, to contribute to the development of courses, to conduct high quality research within the Faculty’s research programme, to write research and funding proposals and to fulfill administrative duties.

In the coming years, the Faculty will make an extra investment in two research themes: 'Digital legal studies: building technology for law' and 'Law in a globalizing society: regulation and protection.’ The assistant-professor is expected to do research on one of these two themes. (see attachment)

Requirements

  • PhD degree in European Law (or obtain a PhD degree in the near future);

  • Excellent research and teaching skills;

  • Flexible, proactive, and able to work both independently and in a team;

  • Excellent presentation and organisational skills;

  • Excellent English language skills (written and spoken);

  • Knowlegde of the Dutch language is an advantage;

  • Maastricht University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, s/he must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 10 years.

Candidates are employed temporarily as assistant professor (level 2) and agree to specific performance goals. Five years after appointment if the performance goals are met, the candidate is promoted to assistant professor (level 1) in a permanent employment. On the candidate’s request, the decision on a permanent employment can be deferred in case of special personal circumstances, such as pregnancy leave, parental leave, or chronic illness.

The salary depends on academic qualifications and experience. The salary will be set in salary scale 11 (minimum gross month salary € 3.637,00 and maximum € 4.978,00) and after being promoted to assistant professor level 1 the salary will be set in salary scale 12 (minimum gross month salary € 4.406,00 and maximum € 5.656,00) of the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities. For people recruited from abroad a reduced income tax rate may apply.
