Job description

The successful candidate is expected to:

Research (0.6 fte)

  • Carry out internationally oriented, empirical research, both independently within the field of the cultural and creative industries (CCIs), and as part of funded sociological research projects on popular music;
  • Strengthen the department’s research profile in the field of the cultural and creative industries, both inside and outside academia, by publishing in top journals and expanding connections with national and international CCIs;
  • Contribute to the acquisition of external research funding from national and international funding agencies and other organizations;
  • Participate actively in the Rotterdam Arts & Sciences Lab, Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture and the EUR Creative Industries research network;
  • Co-develop opportunities and strategies with regards to contract research with arts and culture organizations;
  • Actively contribute to knowledge utilisation activities, together with colleagues, students and industry professionals.

Teaching (0.4 fte)

  • Passionately perform and coordinate teaching tasks, both at the Bachelor and Master level, on the topic of cultural and creative industries and social-science methods;
  • Co-supervise and coach PhD candidates and junior lecturers, particularly within the field of the sociology of music;
  • Contribute to the development of the curriculum with regard to the cultural and creative industries.

Service

  • Contribute to the management tasks of the department, particularly by strengthening the department’s cultural and creative industries profile ;
  • Take an active part in relevant national and international academic networks and organizations;
  • Develop and maintain close contacts with relevant organizations and professionals in the field of arts and culture.

Requirements

The successful candidate considers it a challenge and a privilege to contribute to the development of the international Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in Arts and Culture Studies at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

The candidate has:

  • A PhD degree in sociology, economics or related fields and is among the top 10-20% of his or her peer group;
  • A strong research track record, including publications in international refereed journals;
  • Extensive knowledge of – and ample experience with – a wide range of research methods in the social sciences;
  • The ability and willingness to develop and conduct cross-national, comparative research;
  • The potential to generate research funds from national and international funding agencies;
  • The ability and willingness to teach a variety of subjects in the field of the cultural and creative industries, including methodological courses and BA/MA supervision;
  • Extensive prior teaching experience, preferably in an international environment, with the proven ability to inspire students from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, apparent from positive assessments by students and peers. Candidates who don’t possess a formal teaching qualification, are expected to acquire it within two years (according to the standards of the so-called BKO-University Teaching Qualification);
  • Strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to work closely together with others in an international and diverse team environment;
  • Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English. Non-English speakers have to meet at least the C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF).

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: It is a temporary position for three years.

Employment starts preferably in September 2019. It is a temporary position for three years.

The conditions of employment correspond with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Salary is subject to training and experience and corresponds to Scale 11 CAO NU, with a maximum of € 4.018,-- gross per month on a 38 hour per week contract.

The EUR has attractive employment conditions, which include a holiday allowance of 8.0%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 41 annual vacation days in case of a full workweek.
