In collaboration with the Joep Lange Institute (JLI), the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD) is seeking an inquisitive and results driven early-career researcher in applied anthropology, to fill the position of Post-doctoral Project Fellow. The Project Fellow would be part of a larger team, and would provide project-specific research support in applied anthology and human-centered design (HCD) methods.  The Project Fellow would support a broader research project that seeks to leverage a formalized, networked, communities of practice (CPs) model that utilizes applied anthropology and HCD with select data to enable CPs to innovate and more rapidly implement new technologies and interventions to improve quality, thereby increasing impact and outcomes in HIV and TB.  The project will take a multidisciplinary approach, and a larger group of multidisciplinary researchers will contribute knowledge and overall project direction.

As part of their work, the Project Fellow would also support the creation of a community of practice for those engaged in applied anthropology and HCD to facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of the linkages between the two fields, and integrate lessons learned from various communities/contexts. 

The Project Fellowwill work closely with other researchers and be supervised in her/his daily work by one of the anthropology senior faculty members/primary investigators at AIGHD. 

We offer at a full time (40 hours) position for an initial period of 12 months, with the possibility of renewal.

The fellow should have the following expertise, qualifications, and skills:

• PhD in anthropology or related field, with experience in applied anthropology
• Familiarity with HCD, and linkages and complementarities with applied anthropology and participatory methods
• Understanding of, and experience with, communities of practice in various contexts
• Familiarity with both quantitative and qualitative research methods
• Willing and capable of close collaboration with experts working in other disciplines and domains
• Willing and able to travel internationally for work
• Strong team worker
• Excellent communication skills in English
• Experience working in eastern and southern Africa, specifically Kenya, Malawi, or Swaziland, would be considered a plus.

The project proposal is currently under review at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and we anticipate a start date in early Q2 2018.  Ideally, the Project Fellow would be available to start in parallel with the project commencement for a two-year term.

AIGHD provides an excellent environment for a junior qualitative health researcher who wishes to gain experience, expertise and a network in global health research.
