Functiebeschrijving

Prostate cancer is the most common malignancy in Dutch men. Most prostate tumors are indolent and the patients are more likely to die with the cancer rather than from the cancer. However, in a subset of the patients, the cancer will develop aggressively, with fast growth and quick metastatic spread. Immune cells emerge as important mediators of prostate cancer progression, yet the exact contribution of these cells towards clinical outcome remains unsolved. Your work will be directed to chart the cellular and molecular determinants of anti-tumor immune responses in aggressive versus indolent prostate cancer in order to identify novel targets and define prognostic markers. Your work will be at the interface between fundamental and translational research, and includes techniques in molecular biology, immunology, histology and the use of in vitro cell culture and animal model systems. During your PhD education you will attend relevant courses from the Molecular Medicine post-graduate school and present your results at national and international conferences.

Functie-eisen

You are an ambitious and highly motivated candidate with a university MSc degree in Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Medicine or a related field, and a special interest in (prostate) cancer and immunology. As a successful candidate you have:
  • outstanding theoretical and experimental research skills, with demonstrable laboratory experience;
  • good communication skills and team spirit, reinforcing the collaboration between the departments;
  • proficiency of (scientific) English in speech and writing;
  • possession or willingness to obtain article 9 animal experimentation certificate;
  • knowledge or experience in (cancer) immunology (considered a plus).
Being able to present a certificate of good conduct is a condition for the appointment.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

You will receive a temporary position for 4 years. The gross monthly salary is € 2.266 ,- in the 1st year and increases to € 2.903,- in the 4th year (scale OIO). The terms of employment are according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Dutch University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).

In research, education, and healthcare. We are practical people with a high level of expertise, working hard to improve and renew the healthcare of today and the public health of tomorrow.

This project will be embeded in the Departments of Urology and Medical Oncology, bringing together expertise on prostate cancer and tumor immunology. The Department of Urology has a long-standing reputation in fundamental oncological research in prostate cancer, using well-characterized patient-derived xenografts and knockout mouse models. The laboratory of Tumor Immunology (Department of Medical Oncology) is well recognized for its research of the interplay between immune cells and the tumor milieu and the development and implementation of T-cell therapies directed against solid tumors. Within the setting of these departments, all equipment and facilities necessary for this project are available, including well-equiped molecular and celullar biology labs, dedicated animal technicians and bioinformatics support.
