Job description

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a powerful imaging technique that shows internal structure of tissues with micrometer-order resolution. OCT has been used in various clinical applications, such as pathology, cardiology, ophthalmology and dermatology. Applied in treatment of coronary artery disease, intravascular OCT (IV-OCT) is capable of imaging the structural features of atherosclerotic plaques. The reliance on structural image features for tissue classification, however, may lead to confusion in image interpretation. To achieve a more accurate diagnosis, we have proposed a novel imaging modality, called thermo-elastic OCT (TE-OCT). TE-OCT is a multimodal imaging technique that is based on conventional OCT, but relies on optical absorption in addtion to scattering. The TE-OCT images are constructed by detecting the tiny thermo-elastic deformation that is related to the optical and mechanical properties of the tissue. Thereby, TE-OCT images that contain the tissue type information can be provided together with the structral OCT images to the physician.

The PhD candidate will explore the TE-OCT concept by studying the technical principle, developing prototype scanning devices and carrying the prototypes to biomedical applications. Along this proof-of-concept research line, the PhD candidate will gain experience on optical design, system development, laser-tissue-interaction and pre-clinical/clinical studies. The candidate will also have opportunities to participate in clinical, industrial and international research collaborations.
