Job description

Within this project the PhD student will be examining the (epi)genetic program of pluripotent stem cells as they arise in the embryo. Pluripotency, the ability to generate all the embryonic lineages, arises during pre- and peri-implantation embryonic development as the result of a sequence of distinct genome remodeling events, much of which remains to be elucidated. Chromatin and epigenome analyses, embryo manipulations, advanced microscopic imaging, genetic manipulations, (re)programming and stem cell functional analyses will be applied to study the epigenetic mechanisms that control the development of pluripotency and the transition between different pluripotent states, in human and mouse embryos and pluripotent stem cells. Not only will this research advance the use of reprogramming techniques and pluripotent stem cells in human medicine, some of the reprogramming mechanisms employed during the development of pluripotency contribute to oncogenesis and may inspire novel avenues towards treatment.
