  • Research duties
  • carry out internationally oriented, empirical research that is publishable in established international refereed journals;
  • contribute to the development of the Department’s research on the media and creative industries and the Erasmus Initiative Vital Cities and Citizens;

  • contribute to the generation of research funding from national and international funding organizations ;
  • participate actively in the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture and the Erasmus Initiative Vital Cities and Citizens.
  • Teaching duties
  • perform teaching and supervising tasks for the School’s international bachelor’s and master’s programmes in media and communication ;
  • make a substantial contribution to the development of both bachelor and master level courses regarding the media and creative industries.
  • teach one or more of the methodological core courses and practically oriented workshops that are part of the BA and MA-curriculum;
  • contribute to the expansion of international exchange and internship opportunities for our students.
  • Service
  • contribute to the management tasks of the Department, ERMeCC, and the School;
  • take an active part in relevant Dutch and international academic networks and organizations;
  • develop and maintain close contacts with relevant organizations and professionals in the media and creative industries.

 

 

Functie-eisen

  • a PhD in one of the social sciences, preferably in the field of media and communication, and ranks among the top 10-20% of his or her peer group;
  • a strong research track record, including publications in international refereed journals;
  • ample experience with social-scientific research methods;
  • the ability and willingness to develop and conduct cross-national, comparative research;
  • expert knowledge in the field of media and creative industries and the ability to make a substantial contribution to the development of introductory and specialization courses in this field.
  • the potential to generate research funds from national and international funding agencies and to supervise junior researchers and PhD students;
  • prior teaching experience with the proven ability to inspire students from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, apparent from positive assessments by students and peers. Candidates who dont possess a formal teaching qualification, are expected to acquire it within two years (according to the standards of the so-called Basis Qualifications for Teaching, BKO);
  • the ability and willingness to teach a wide range of topics in the field of media and communication and to develop new courses;
  • strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to work closely together with others in a team environment;
  • proficiency in spoken and written English. Non-English speakers have to meet the
  • C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF). International applicants are expected to acquire a passive understanding of the Dutch language within two years

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

Employment starts in September, 2017. Depending on the candidate’s experience and track-record contracts will be running for a fixed term of one to three years. After their initial contract candidates may be offered an extension or a permanent contract.

The conditions of employment correspond with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Salary is subject to training and experience and corresponds to Scale 11 or 12 CAO NU, with a maximum of € 5.405,--  gross per month on a 38 hour per week contract. 

The EUR has attractive employment conditions, which include a holiday allowance of 8.0%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 41 annual vacation days in case of a full workweek.

Erasmus Initiative Vital Cities and Citizens

The Erasmus University has recently launched three so-called Erasmus Initiatives, through which academic excellence and multidisciplinary collaboration in research is stimulated. One of these is the Vital Cities and Citizens project which aims to (1) advance our understanding of the ways in which social and cultural transformations affect urban life - and (2) by doing so – to help cities thrive as places of inclusion, tolerance and cohesion, and better articulate the aspirations of their diverse citizens. The Erasmus Initiative Vital Cities and Citizens is a collaboration between the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS), the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC), and the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS).

Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC)
The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication  includes the Departments of Media and Communication, Arts and Culture Studies, and History at Erasmus University. The ESHCC is home to more than 1.100 students and around
130 faculty and staff members.

Media and Communication
The Department of Media and Communication is a vibrant, internationally oriented department within the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication. The Department offers two Dutch language programmes in Media Studies (Media & Journalistiek and Media & Cultuur) and five international degree programmes: the International Bachelor’s programme in Communication and Media (IBCoM), two international Master’s programmes in Media Studies (Media & Business; Media, Culture & Society) and the Research master’s in the Sociology of Culture, Media and the Arts. The Department is closely linked to the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC), which serves as the main base for researchers in Media, Communication and Culture at Erasmus.
