Department

The Department of Psychology, Education & Child Studies provides education and research in the area of pedagogical and psychological sciences and is embedded within the Faculty of Social Science. The education is characterized by a successful and innovative didactical approach: problem based learning in combination with extensive professional and academic skills training. Our bachelor and master tracks receive top rankings each year.

The focus of both the educational and research program for the Clinical Child and Family Studies section is complex (problematic) behavior in an urban context. Our mission is to conduct research on the complex interplay of parenting, biology and personality on child adaptive and maladaptive development from infancy to emerging adulthood. Using a life span perspective, we study the effects of environmental (parents, peers), biological (epigenetics, brain structure, cortisol), and parent and child personality factors on behavioral maladjustment, including internalizing and externalizing behavior, as well as behavioral adjustment, focusing specifically on prosocial and moral development. For this purpose we use data of two unique longitudinal studies: the Flemish Study on Parenting, Personality and Development and the Generation-R Study. In addition, the effectiveness of evidence-based interventions is studied to support parents of children with developmental disorders. The department has an excellent laboratory (including EEG and eyetracking).
