Job description

Solar cells made from hybrid perovskite semiconductors have emerged only recently, yet their efficiency is already comparable to that of silicon solar cells. In contrast to the rapid progress in efficiency, our understanding of why hybrid perovskite solar cells perform so well is lacking. Charge-carrier recombination is one of the most important properties of a solar-cell material, and in hybrid perovskites it is unusually slow.
In this project you will investigate the origin of this unusually slow recombination. The bandstructure of these perovskites is different from most common semiconductors, and you will investigate how changing the bandstructure will affect the recombination dynamics, as well as the consequences of those changes for perovskite solar cells.
You will study the optical and electrical properties of the perovskites under hydrostatic pressure, both in steady-state and time-resolved.

Research

The Hybrid Solar Cell Group focuses on novel paths towards more efficient solar cells using both organic and inorganic materials. We aim at combining the unique properties and the richness of organic materials with the highly efficient, well characterised inorganic materials.
We provide a highly collaborative environment, both within the group and with our national and international collaborators

NWO-I

Requirements

We seek candidates with a very strong background in physics, chemistry, material science, or engineering with an interest in solar cells. We offer a fully funded PhD position for the duration of four years. You will need to meet the requirements for an MSc degree, to ensure eligibility for a Dutch PhD examination.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: four years.

When fulfilling a PhD position at the NWO-I, the Institutes Organisation of NWO, you will get the status of junior scientist. You will have an employee status and can participate in all the employee benefits the NWO Institutes Organisation (NWO-I) offers. You will get a contract for four years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 2,834 euro gross per month. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 percent and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33 percent. You are supposed to have a thesis finished at the end of your four year term with NWO-I. A training programme is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. This plan also defines which teaching activities you will be responsible (up to a maximum of ten percent of your time). The conditions of employment of NWO-I are laid down in the Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres (Cao-Onderzoekinstellingen), more exclusive information is available at this website under Personeelsinformatie (in Dutch) or under Personnel (in English). General information about working at NWO-I can be found in the English part of this website under Personnel. The 'Job interview code' applies to this position.
