From the history of the Second World War to stem cell research, from the phenomenon of sleep to the Frisian language, and from the Great Tit population to medieval manuscripts: the fifteen research institutes belonging to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) focus on a wide variety of different research topics. Several of the institutes also manage important archives and collections and make them available for research. Their work contributes to scientific, social, cultural and economic progress.

The second, and oldest, pillar of the Academy is the Society, which unites the very best scientists and scholars from every conceivable discipline. The Society serves as the forum, conscience and voice of science and scholarship in the Netherlands, for example by advising the government and assessing the quality and integrity of research.

The KNAW Bureau supports both the institutes and the Society. The Academy employs approximately 1300 people. We collaborate with universities and research schools in the Netherlands, for example on research projects and in training young researchers. We set the highest standards in our personnel policy, both for researchers and support staff. That means that we expect a lot of our employees.
